Recognizing this importance, Numetry Technologies recently hosted an insightful virtual time management session on March 9th, 2024. As the COO at my previous firm, I often lost track of time while working on strategic initiatives or preparing for key meetings, including company-wide town halls. These moments brought a deep sense of satisfaction and were intrinsically rewarding, putting me into a state known as "flow." This psychological condition, which I've been learning more about recently, occurs when one is fully immersed in an activity, feeling energized, focused, and enjoying the process. Flow offers numerous benefits: increased productivity, enhanced quality of work, greater satisfaction, skill development, and heightened creativity. Can you imagine the potential if we all worked in a state of flow? However, as an executive, I faced a common challenge: finding enough uninterrupted time during the workday to engage in deep work and enter a flow state. In today’s work environment, constant interruptions from emails, texts, direct messages, coworkers, and meetings make it difficult to focus. How often have you found yourself working on something, only to be distracted by an email and momentarily disengage? Research shows it takes 10-15 minutes of undisturbed focus to enter a flow state. To combat these distractions, my solution was to wake up early and work before the typical office hours began, achieving more before 8:30 AM than during the rest of the day. Now, as a solopreneur, I block daily time in my calendar for deep work, creating the right conditions for flow. Recognizing flow's benefits, some companies are adopting strategies like no-meeting days or quiet zones to support deep work. These practices can help employees achieve flow, leading to greater productivity, innovation, and job satisfaction.
