As an agronomist and founder of Abuti Spinach, I am excited to see the narrative around agriculture shifting, especially among the youth. Recently, CS nominee Kagwe stated that agriculture is boring and needs to be made cool for the youth. I couldn't agree more. For too long, agriculture has been perceived as a mundane and unattractive career path, particularly among young people. However, I believe that with the right approach, agriculture can be made appealing and exciting, especially with the incorporation of technology and innovation. The question is, how can we make agriculture cool and attractive to the youth? What initiatives and strategies can be implemented to change the perception of agriculture and encourage young people to pursue careers in this field? As someone who is passionate about empowering small-scale farmers in Africa, I believe that it is time for us to rethink our approach to agriculture and make it more appealing to the next generation. On 4th July 2024, we organized an open forum at Almaktoun Senior High school, Yendi to sensitize students on the awareness of opportunities in the agricultural sector and green job as part of Action Learning Project of PolicyLink Leading for Change program. We discussed so many topics with them which includes: 1. OVERVIEW OF AGRICULTURE 2. GREEN JOBS 3. SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE 4. BENEFITS OF PRACTICING SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE 5. AGROFORESTRY 6. IMPORTANCE OF AGRICULTURE TO THE YOUTH 7. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN STUDYING AGRICULTURE AND RELATED PROGRAMS 8. GREEN JOBS OPPORTUNITIES IN AGRICULTURE During this discussion, a lot of the students didn’t know so much about the opportunities in the agricultural sector. We discussed so many opportunities with them and the career opportunities in the agriculture and green jobs sector. The programme ended successful, with the intention to create the green champions club. I'm Jibril Saidu, a passionate agripreneur and a graduate of the Enterprise for Youth in Agriculture (EYiA) program. During my three months of extensive training, I specialized in soilless farming and greenhouse construction, gaining hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge in these innovative agricultural techniques. Prior to my training, I had already developed a keen interest in agribusiness, recognizing its potential to drive sustainable development and food security. My background in soilless farming has equipped me with the skills to grow crops in a controlled environment, using methods that conserve water and reduce the reliance on traditional soil-based agriculture. This experience has also honed my abilities in constructing and managing greenhouses, enabling me to optimize growing conditions for higher yields and better-quality produce. My goals in the Mentorship Accelerator Program are multifaceted. Firstly, I aim to deepen my expertise in climate-smart agricultural practices, learning how to adapt and innovate in response to climate change challenges. Secondly, I seek to expand my network within the agricultural sector, connecting with industry experts, mentors, and fellow agripreneurs to share knowledge and collaborate on impactful projects. Lastly, I aspire to refine my business acumen, gaining insights into scaling agribusiness ventures, accessing markets, and improving operational efficiency. Australia is lagging other countries in preparing young people for careers in agriculture. That’s the finding contained in Kathryn Fleay’s Nuffield Scholarship report, released today.   Kathryn, an agronomy and operations manager from Western Australia’s wheatbelt, researched how Australia could shore up its agricultural workforce, particularly through university degrees with strong ties to the industry.   Supported by CSBP Fertilisers, Kathryn travelled to the United States of America, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands, to explore how Australia could better foster agricultural futures by empowering young people from non-agricultural backgrounds to pursue careers in the industry.   Kathryn found that agriculture and agrifood degrees in the countries she visited better-prepared students to work in the rapidly changing industries. “Driven by advancements in technology and the increasing pressures of environmental and societal demands, professionals in these sectors require new skills to adapt and thrive,” she said.   On the other hand, Kathryn reports that the number of agricultural university graduates in Australia has stagnated, while job opportunities in the sector continue to outpace graduate supply.   “Attracting and retaining skilled individuals in agriculture must be a top priority.” I believe that these are systemic issues and that every individual working in tertiary agriculture education is highly committed and works extremely hard to deliver the best quality outcomes for students. Just as in vocational education in the agribusiness sector, there are no easy solutions and the way forward will require a multifaceted approach that involves educational providers, industry, academics, government, and other specialist organisations. It’s been a tough year, a year that’s demanded more of us than we thought we had to give. But growing up, I learned that it is in these very times we must find the courage to increase our level of giving. When the world feels heavy, that’s when we have to rise and give what we can, what we must, to those who have the potential to carry us forward. So, a new chapter begins. Food For Mzansi, Agricultural Development Agency-AGDA, De Beers, and Agri Skills Transfer have come together to invest R1.89 million in the futures of 21 individuals. They will now have the chance to shape the future of agriculture in South Africa, a future that remains uncertain until they, with their hands and hearts, build it. These 21 scholars, each granted R90 000 to pursue national diplomas in plant or animal production, are not just accumulating knowledge – they are gaining the power to transform their lives and their communities. With these scholarships, they are no longer prisoners of circumstance. They are free to push beyond the limits imposed on them, to dream and to act. From Steinkopf in the Northern Cape to Polokwane in Limpopo, the Agri Skills Transfer qualification offers remote learning, making it possible for individuals from the most remote corners of South Africa to earn a two-year diploma while still tending to their fields and farms. These students, hailing from all walks of life, represent the future of agriculture in the country – a future where education and opportunity walk side by side. Among these recipients is Zolelwa Bala from Witbank, a 35-year-old farmer who juggles cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs on his family farm, and Chade van Wyk, a 19-year-old from Steinkopf, just out of high school. We received nearly 900 applications, each one a testament to the hunger for opportunity, for change. But in the end, we could only support 21. It feels like a small number, but don’t be mistaken. This is 21 steps forward, a glimmer of what is possible when we give, when we believe. And we stand with them, proud and humbled to witness their journey.
