Since starting the Wondergarden we have seen a significant increase in environmental benefits though our practices. Wondergarden has rediscovered 90 local, traditional, heritage food crops out of the 210 documented by the Kenyan National Museum. This vital effort helps preserve cultural heritage and biodiversity. Wondergarden has also successfully supported 44 farming communities, positively affecting over 3,000 farmers through the sales of heritage ingredients. Furthermore, Wondergarden has supported approximately 200,000 home gardens. This extensive support has contributed significantly to widespread food security and local sustainability, allowing families to grow their own nutritious food and reduce dependency on external sources. Conservation efforts have also been a priority, with Wondergarden managing to preserve 83,000 hectares of land. Did you know, there are over 270 species of bees? 🐝 This recent article in The Guardian offers some fascinating insights into the biodiversity of bees. It also explains that alongside the increased popularity of beekeeping, particularly the keeping of honeybees, there is a very real need to focus on the different ways we can protect and support the environments that benefit solitary wild bees, which are at risk of being overwhelmed by growing populations of honeybees. Some of the ideas here include planting schemes to increase access to pollinators throughout the year, and avoiding the use of chemicals and pesticides in gardens and outdoor spaces. The proposed biodiversity goals include boosting the amount of land designated for conservation to allow the large-scale harvesting from wild animals, increasing the production and marketing of products from indigenous plants and promoting leisure hunting and tourism.

Today, I was reminded of the beautiful work that we developed in Bolivian rural communities together with La Senda Verde Animal Refuge Inc. and Kristi Odom. We used native stingless bees as a vehicle to teach about environmental awareness, forest conservation, rewilding, and the importance of creating sustainable job opportunities in remote areas. I will share a bit more information about this group of bees, which are also present in Tropical Africa, Southern Asia, and Australia: "Stingless bees, or meliponines, are a group of insects native to tropical and subtropical regions that play an important role as pollinators of native flora. Before the arrival of colonizers, who introduced the common honeybee (Apis mellifera), stingless bees were the only bees that stored honey within colonies and were utilized by many indigenous cultures in Africa, South, and Central America, who used their honey, wax, propolis, and pollen. Meliponiculture is not only a productive activity but also an alternative to promote sustainability at the social, cultural, economic, and ecological levels. By encouraging the conservation of this group of bees that provide multiple services to humans and the ecosystem, such as pollinating native flora, pollinating commercial crops, and honey production. It is vital that both farmers, researchers, sociologists, indigenous peoples, and professionals in the fields of conservation, ecology, and related areas be trained in the new techniques and technologies of this field, which are becoming increasingly important economically, socially, and environmentally." https://lnkd.in/evfbR_PU
