The ranking isn’t surprising, but there’s still a long way to go to achieve the necessary capacity per country. #battery #energystorage https://lnkd.in/gXAq8BRk

“A mix of eight-hour and longer duration storage is the cheapest way to secure Australia’s grid at $90 per megawatt hour (/MWh) on a Long-Run Marginal Cost (LRMC) basis, says the report by Endgame Economics. That is compared to $145/MWh if Australia only relied on 2-hour battery storage – a future that is not likely, but one that Endgame Economic director Oliver Nunn says people need to understand is also not feasible. “ #storage #batteries #ev #solar

While California has meticulously cultivated its battery fleet through strategic policies and subsidies, Texas is charging ahead, fueled by private developers capitalizing on the competitive ERCOT wholesale markets. This contrasting approach underscores the dynamic nature of clean energy technologies in diverse market scenarios. When California has meticulously cultivated its battery fleet, Texas is charging ahead, and #LithiumValley is right here, providing your tools and energy storage technology to power this clean energy shift. Whether in California's policy-driven market or Texas's competitive landscape, Lithium Valley will be your great choice. https://lnkd.in/g8qvM5in #EnergyStorage #batterystorage #rooftopsolar

In California, heat waves are pushing peak electricity demand to new highs. Most new capacity is solar and wind, adding to intermittency. Millions of EVs on the road are adding to the challenge in this state of 40 million, where over 20% of new car sales are electric. It makes sense that California is one of the world’s leaders in bringing utility-scale #lithium #battery storage online. California has almost 4 GW of pumped hydro and estimates exceeding 7 GW of battery storage, most of which can be dispatched at peak hours. #energystorage https://lnkd.in/gH2hD5XX

The first #battery units have been installed at Synergy (Electricity Generation and Retail Corporation)’s $1.6 billion Collie BESS which is set to be one of the largest in Australia. The Collie #BESS is schedule to be connected to the #grid in 2025, and once complete will provide 500MW of #power and 2000MW/h of #storage. That means the battery will be able to power 785,000 average homes for four hours – making it one of Australia’s biggest #batterysystems. The first 80 units are now in place, with the entire system to include 640 units when complete.

Some interesting #energystorage insights from the Energy Research and Development Division of the California Energy Commission (CEC) here. 🕰️ Storage facilities with a range and mixture of durations from 4 to 100 hours would be needed to support the California grid, but facilities with an 8-hour duration would likely make up the largest proportion of LDES facilities 📈 70GW of 8h flexibility with 300 cycles a year will be needed by 2045 for a #netzero grid. 🔁 A useful #LDES rubric: “…when the [round trip] efficiency of 8-hour facilities dropped to 50%, the US$/kW cost would need to be roughly *half* that of 4-hour duration facilities with an 85% efficiency in order to remain competitive…” -> In other words lower efficiency alternatives to Lithium ion #batteries have to be 50% cheaper to compete with lithium ion for the 8 hour duration use cases. No easy task, considering the continuing cell price declines year over year. 💯 On the other hand: “low efficiencies are more acceptable for storage that is used infrequently, such as 100 hour storage” Link to the full report is in the ESN article below:
Most LDES projects set to be 8-hour systems, says California Energy Commission

“California crosses 10 GW #utilitybatterystorage threshold” “CAISO set a new peak battery discharge record of 8.3 GW on October 9, as the state’s future EIA #energystorage queue holds 177 GW of capacity, with 1.9 GW expected added through the end of the year.” OCTOBER 14, 2024 - JOHN FITZGERALD WEAVER From ESS News “The California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which manages about 80% of California’s electricity, has connected 10.219 GW of #utilityscale #energystorage to its managed #powergrid as of the first day of October this year.” “The data was released as part of the ISO’s Key Statistics report for September 2024. The 10.2 GW value was a 0.9 GW increase from August’s 9.3 GW on the #grid , and a greater than 3 GW jump from the 7.1 GW that was connected as of the state of 2024.” https://lnkd.in/eUMehK-U?
