One of the most beautiful parts of the holidays is the fact that you get to choose the meaningful traditions to carry on that bring joy to your season, and ditch the ones that have just become a chore or checklist. And there are so many to choose from...or maybe this is the year that you come up with a holiday tradition unique to your family! Perhaps these options that Team Lime pulled together may spark some fun ideas for holiday traditions to consider: 🎄Incorporate the smell of fresh pine with a nice arrangement or wreath 🎄Find an ornament that sums up the year (2024 flare) 🎄Prepare a travel mug of hot cocoa and tour neighborhood lights 🎄Wear an ugly Christmas sweater...or better yet, make one! 🎄Prepare a gift for neighbors that you appreciate 🎄Make gingerbread houses or cookies with your favorite nostalgic candy 🎄Buy a little poinsettia for the kitchen counter or a cozy spot in your home 🎄Hang mistletoe for a special moment with your loved one. 🎄Go ice skating...if you're coordinated and you dare! 🎄Hang a pickle ornament on the tree...a German tradition where the first family member to find it gets an extra gift or will have good fortune 🎄 Have a favorite things gathering with people you love who come sharing something they can't live without 🎄Volunteer your time in a meaningful way and donate belongings going unused that others would be blessed by 🎄Put an oversized orange in the toe of stockings (a tradition dating back hundreds of years that's an ode to the generosity of St. Nicholas) 🎄Set up a holiday movie night with your favorite classic (It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, and A Christmas Carol are classics...with one too many Scrooge variations like A Christmas Karen - cringe) 🎄 Run your December errands while enjoying classic holiday songs playing in the background (John Philip Sousa’s Sleigh Ride, Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmas time, José Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad, etc.) What are your tried and true holiday traditions that you'd add to this list or share? We'd love to hear! #holidays #Christmas #XMas #traditions #lifesciences #Lime

🎄 23 things to love about wintertime in Chicago🎄 The winter season is officially here. And there are plenty of things to dislike about it... 4pm sunsets. Freezing temperatures. Shoveling out your parking space. But let's not forget about all the things that make this time of year special: 1. Cold weather sleeping – it's the best. 2. Warm socks. 3. The peaceful quiet that comes with fresh snow. 4. Christmas movies. 5. New Year's Eve celebrations. 6. Everyone committed to their lofty New Year's resolutions in the first week of the year. 7. Most people giving up in the second week. 8. Hot cocoa. 9. Extra time with family. 10. Traffic - less people out and about means smoother traffic (weather permitting). 11. Enjoying a slower, more reflective pace of life. 12. Cozy fires. 13. Twinkling Christmas lights. 14. A well-timed vacation to someplace warm. 15. Ice skating. 16. Ski trips. 17. Leaving food in the car - the world is one big refrigerator. 18. Ugly Christmas sweaters. 19. Dogs in sweaters. 20. Dogs in booties (adorable). 21. Holiday parties. 22. Heated car seats. 23. The reminder to appreciate the summer months and not take things for granted. Although winter can be a struggle, I challenge you to appreciate the little joys that warm us up inside. What would you add to the list? ----- Photo used with permission from source: Shutterstock

Hello, wonderful friends! 🌨️✨ Today marks the First Day of Winter, also known as the #WinterSolstice! Even though it's the shortest day of the year, let's embrace the excitement it brings. The Winter Solstice means that from this point onward, the days will be getting longer little by little. Isn't that amazing?! Sure, with the winter chill comes shorter daylight, but it's also the perfect excuse to get cozy in sweaters, sip on hot cocoa, and enjoy crisp winter walks with loved ones. Plus, think about all the fun activities winter has to offer: building snowmen, ice skating, or having snowball fights! Here's a fun fact for you: the Winter Solstice happens because the Earth is tilted away from the sun today, giving us those long nights. However, it’s like the sun is giving us a little nudge each day after this, reminding us that spring will eventually follow. Let’s make the most of today by celebrating everything winter has to offer! Maybe you’ll light a candle or read stories by the fire. Or perhaps you'll take this chance to reflect on the past year and make a wish for what’s to come. As the days start to stretch a bit longer, remember this is a fresh start for all of us. Each sunrise will bring a couple more moments of light, so let’s use it to spread kindness and joy. What are your favorite winter activities? Or how about a wish you have for the coming season? Share in the comments below! Let’s warm each other's hearts with positivity and cheer even as the nights remain chilly. ❄️❤️ So, bundle up, enjoy the extra twinkle in the night sky, and have a magical #WinterSolstice. Here's to longer days and brighter moments ahead! Stay warm and joyful, everyone! ☕❄️ #WinterMagic #CozyVibes #BrighterDays

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗷𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲? Here’s a fun, inclusive way to keep everyone engaged: create a “J𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.” Have each family member—kids, partners, or even houseguests—write down what they’d like to do over the break. These can be budget-friendly ideas like visiting a local park, playing a favorite board game, or baking cookies, or more extravagant ones like a day trip to a nearby city or ice skating. Each day of your time off, pick an activity from the jar, and make it happen. You’re not only creating memories but also giving everyone input into how the time is spent. If you’re on a budget, encourage creative, free options like finding holiday light displays, hiking, or making homemade crafts. If you have a set budget for activities, decide how much to allocate and let family members choose within those limits. 𝗣𝗿𝗼 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Some activities won’t take long, so feel free to pick multiple. This method keeps the holiday spirit alive and spontaneous while removing the stress of planning everything yourself.

One of the most enchanting traditions of the holiday season in Germany is the Christmas Market – or Weihnachtsmarkt. These festive markets, which can be found in cities and towns across the country, are a magical way to experience the holiday spirit. Stalls filled with handmade crafts, beautiful ornaments, and delicious treats like Bratwurst, Glühwein (mulled wine), and Lebkuchen (gingerbread) create a warm and joyful atmosphere. 💖 Some of the most famous Christmas markets in Germany include those in Nuremberg, Munich, Cologne, and Dresden – each offering a unique blend of local culture, food, and entertainment. The medieval towns and historic squares are transformed into winter wonderlands, complete with twinkling lights, carolers, and ice skating rinks. ❄️ But these festive markets are not just a German tradition! Austria, Switzerland, and other parts of Central Europe also celebrate with their own beautiful Christmas markets. In fact, France and the UK have become known for their seasonal markets as well, with places like Strasbourg (France) and Edinburgh (Scotland) hosting some of the most popular ones outside Germany. Whether you're browsing for handmade gifts, enjoying a warm cup of spiced wine, or simply soaking in the festive atmosphere, Christmas markets have become a beloved tradition that brings people together to celebrate the season. ☕💝

The Nightmare Before Christmas (tales from the Atlantic) This year’s crews are having a tough time, battling big seas as well as Sahara dust clouds which are impacting the power they can generate through their solar panels. They’re exhausted, yet for most, not even a third of the way through the race. Conditions in our race were a little different, with relatively calm seas for the first 10 days. While that might sound like a relative picnic, what we quickly realised was the lack of wind and waves meant that it felt like we were rowing through treacle. Progress was slow, and in a race of over 3,000 miles, that’s demoralising. It felt like our 45-day target might be well out of reach. Christmas brought a very different experience. Christmas Eve heralded ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’. We faced an onslaught of flying fish, slapping us about, marauding around the deck in a flapping of dying wings, leaving me flapping around the deck in a similar fashion. All good entertainment for Jo Blackshaw , Lebby Eyres and Pippa Edwards. After the fish, came the water maker breakdown. It’s an essential piece of equipment and if it fails, can mean the end of your race. It took 2 hours of anxious tinkering, upside down inside a furnace-like locker, to fix it. Then, when I’d expected to start my 11pm shift and with it, our version of Midnight Mass to welcome in Christmas Day, all hell broke loose. Huge waves had knocked us off course, burning out the auto-helm in the process. Looking around, the stars were in the wrong place as we were speeding along in the wrong direction. What followed was several hours of putting all our efforts into turning the boat around – it was like a weight-lifting marathon, with the imminent threat of a drenching from beam-on waves, or worse, capsize. In the aftermath of the spin came the first row of the row, with emotions and bodies fragile. Christmas Day dawned, and it was a sombre, reflective day on board. The incidents of the previous 24 hours, combined with missing home and our families, making it a day to get through, rather than a day to celebrate. It was always going to be a tough day, but conditions had made it particularly testing. We may be smiling in this photo, but it wasn’t reflective of the mood in camp. I’m looking forward to a calmer, merrier affair this year, and wish you all the same. 🎄 For a more extensive account of our sea-faring adventures, I’m featured in an article of Lebby Eyres' The Ocean Oracle this week. You need to subscribe but can read one article in full before reaching the pay-wall. Link in the comments.
