Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have attracted much attention as a future mainstream photovoltaics technology. However, a realistic efficiency target has been missing in literature, as most calculations so far have been based on too simplistic assumptions (ignoring e.g. Auger recombination and actual absorption coefficient data,...). In this perspective article led by Thomas Allen, we define a realistic efficiency target of 37.8% for monolithic tandems and outline critical steps to be undertaken towards achieving that goal.

Counting 1, 2, 3... and now even 4! 🎉 Thrilled to share our breakthrough on multijunction (up to 4J) perovskite photovoltaics, just published by Nature https://lnkd.in/eDsmvANA! What an amazing year-end gift! Congratulations to all involved. We’d love for you to check it out! Huge thanks to the incredible team, Henry Snaith, Atsushi Wakamiya, and all our super supportive collaborators for their solid contributions, which enabled us, with Junke Wang, to establish this exciting milestone! In this study, we successfully fabricated large-area, record-high-efficiency double-, triple-, and — for the first time — quadruple-junction perovskite solar cells. We provided a comprehensive understanding of the intricate solution chemistry and great control of optoelectronic properties of narrow-bandgap (~1.25 eV) mixed tin-lead perovskites. In addition, we developed six highly efficient middle (~1.6 eV), wide (~1.8 eV), and very-wide (~2.0 eV) bandgap neat-lead perovskite solar cells. Superior low-loss tandem interconnecting layers were also developed. Time to go junctions beyond two, for perovskite-containing photovoltaics!

On April 8th, 2024, a total solar eclipse was experienced in different regions in the United States. Through data connected to Nantum AI, we identified multiple insights on how the eclipse alters the normal pattern of the energy systems, buildings, and building occupants. Thank you to the partnership of National Renewable Energy Laboratory and The University of Texas at Dallas with our own R&D team leaders (Ali Mehmani, PhD, Gulai Shen, and Amir Behjat) in the creation of this study!
