Lisette Van Doorn opened the Europe Conference 2024 in Milan. Attracting over 700 delegates in over 27 countries. Lisette, alongside today's moderator, Prof Greg Clark CBE FAcSS went onto explain that as the world around us continues to change at an ever-faster pace, it requires a response from the industry. The conferences speakers will address many of today's challenges from geopolitics, macroeconomics, ESG and hybrid working challenges. The industry tends to look at each of these challenges in isolation. However, many of them are connected, and require addressing these issues holistically to create efficiencies. Providing decarbonisation, as an example, we observe a lot of action happening across the industry, including: During her opening remarks, Lisette highlights the urgent need for a holistic approach to climate change. By future proofing our buildings and cities to creative liveable, healthy, vibrant places. Reminding delegates - decarbonisation is a means not a goal. She discussed the physical form of climate risk impacts areas including: Insurability, Finance-ability of buildings, Potential damage, Biodiversity. Health and wellbeing and Social impact. Real estate will always have an impact. ‘We should look at how we can make it a positive impact.’ This can happen in many ways from how we set Net zero targets, investments in resources and technology, Capex plans and decarbonisation pathway analyses and how this is measured which continues to be a growing burden. On the (repurposed) ferry back to the city after the final day of the Climate Change and Business Conference, I was thinking about business models… I’ve said it before and the conference once again reinforced it to me: - the why is unequivocal (science) - the what is well known (solutions) - the how is the job to be done (strategy, business models, financing to scale the solutions) And there were some interesting business model themes that came through for me during the conference. The potential business model archetypes that seem to be growing in importance are those centred around: - repurposing (capabilities and assets) - aggregating (spacial and temporal) - standardising (supply and demand) - disintermediating (scientific and digital innovation) - collaborating (intra and inter-industry) ***edit from the bike into work*** Swap: - collaborating (intra and inter-industry) *necessary across all archetypes* For: - smoothing (volatility/turbulence and uncertainty) *** I think a lot of these emerge from the addressing the challenges and capitalising on the advantages associated with our scale and couple nicely with a focused strategy around key niches, particularly in the global context.
