3 common mistakes career-change teachers make in their new CVs And how to fix them. 1 Gaps in service In teacher application forms, any gaps in career history is a red-flag for safeguarding and therefore a big no-no for education. Teachers therefore apply the same principal to their CV and list every role or break in career history, irrespective of whether or not the listing is relevant. The result is a long CV filled with disjointed information that is not adding any value to their application. Gaps in service within a CV is perfectly fine. Make your CV relevant to the post you are applying for – not everything you did previously is going to ‘fit’. 2 Sounding like a teacher Of course, you are going to have teaching experience and all the duties / skills associated with a career in education. And that is brilliant – if you still want to apply to be a teacher! However, if you are writing a CV for job applications, there is a very strong likelihood that you are not applying to be a teacher (almost always done through application forms). If you sound too much like a teacher, it will leave the recruiter wondering why you applying and / or how your skills fit. Make sure you get rid of the teaching acronyms and ensure your experience is in transferable language. Be explicit in how your knowledge is a fit for the role you are applying for. 3 Lack of evidence Teachers are completely familiar with data in the classroom, but somehow are able to write an entire CV with no evidence whatsoever to quantify their impact. For example, “helped support colleagues in my year group.” Erm, sorry but so what? Show how you have impact by giving it a tangible outcome. For example, “raised standards by 20% as a result of mentoring colleagues.” Any recruiter in any industry will be able to understand the success of this achievement. Writing a CV is a bit of an art form to really master it well. You have options when it comes to your CV. 1 Have a go yourself. Get it out there. If you get offers for interviews, your CV is doing its job. If you don’t get offers, then you should get a CV review as maybe you haven’t quite got it right. I offer free CV reviews for teachers and school leaders. 2 Book a professional CV writing service so that you can focus on job searching and leave me to weave my magic, so that you find the role you want knowing your professional CV will help you stand out from the crowds of amateurs. Academic CV or work CV? Here are 10 headings you can include in your academic CV when applying for graduate school. If you don’t have all of these headings, stick to the ones you have to create your academic CV. 👉 Education 👉 Skills 👉 Experience 👉 Awards & Recognition 👉 Publications (this can be published papers or research works) 👉 Leadership 👉 Volunteer Position/Extracurricular 👉 Academic Membership/Association 👉 Certifications 👉 Conferences While it is advisable to stick to 1 or 2 pages, a 3-page CV is accepted in rare cases. As much as possible, make it short, sweet, and straight to the point. Highlight the most relevant information. Add metrics and quantifiable results. Remember to also use action verbs in describing your bullet points. An academic CV is more appropriate for graduate school and it's different from a work CV in some ways. If you're interested in learning about the work CV, check the comments for a resource that will give you all you need to create your work CV. Next week, look out for the post on how to write diversity essays.

3 common misconceptions teachers make writing a CV As a professional CV writer with a 20+ year career in education, I have an insider’s knowledge on the subject of teacher CVs. So, if you are looking to leave education and creating (or re-creating) a CV to get your new career off the ground, you might wish to read on and avoid the 3 common misconceptions I regularly find in teachers’ CVs. INCLUDE EVERYTHING Gaps in work history in education are bad, so teacher application forms need to account for EVERYTHING. It is understandable that the same mantra is applied to a CV but stop, it is a misconception. It is absolutely fine to have gaps in work history if including a particular role has no relevance. Only include relevant history that can demonstrate transferable skills. Anything else, scrap – it’s taking up valuable space. LIST YOUR DUTIES Teachers do a lot in any given day, let alone over the course of a particular role. It is easy to get caught up listing everything you do but will this have impact? What will your new employer want you to do? What have you done that is similar or transferable? For example, will “leading an after-school club” matter within a project manager role? Well, it depends – is what you did relevant to the new role? ONLY A TEACHER Teacher CVs are naturally going to demonstrate teaching skills, but if you don’t want to be a teacher anymore, writing a CV that sounds like a ‘desperate teacher’ is unlikely to do you many favours. All employers want to know their new recruit will make a positive contribution and the best way to show you can cut the grade is by demonstrating the impact you make. Add measurable data to valid your impact at least somewhere in your CV. Need help with optimising your CV for a new career, check out my list of services and rates at the link in the comments. Highly rated Academic CV✅✅✅✅ 🎓 Crafting an Academic CV: The DO's and DONT's 📝 When it comes to applying for admission to a school or pursuing an academic role like lecturing, your CV speaks volumes about your qualifications and achievements. Here are some key tips to keep in mind: DOs: Prioritize relevant information: Highlight your education, research experience, publications, presentations, teaching experience, and any relevant awards or honours. Tailor your CV to the position: Customize your CV for each application, emphasizing the skills and experiences most relevant to the role. Use a clear and professional format: Organize your CV logically, use consistent formatting, and proofread carefully for errors. Quantify your achievements: Whenever possible, include metrics or numbers to demonstrate the impact of your work. DONTs: Overwhelm with unnecessary details: Avoid including irrelevant information or listing every minor accomplishment. Use generic templates: Stand out by creating a unique and visually appealing CV that reflects your personality and professionalism. Forget to update regularly: Keep your CV up-to-date with your latest accomplishments and experiences. Include personal information: While some personal details like contact information are necessary, avoid including sensitive information like age, marital status, or religious affiliation. Neglect the importance of presentation: A well-presented CV creates a positive first impression, so invest time in formatting and design. I have always recommended Dr. Olumuyiwa's CV as a good example of an academic CV. #CV #academiccv #gradschool #share and hashtag #tag your friends

I get asked this question a lot. When I talk about my CV writing services and mention that I write both professional and academic CVs, people ask to know the difference between the two. 📍Here are a few key differences! ✅ Focus: A professional CV focuses on relevant work experiences, skills, and achievements while an academic CV emphasizes on academic background, research experience, and publications. ✅ Length: A professional CV is typically 1-2 pages in length, with a clear and concise language while an academic CV can be longer than a professional CV and with more detailed information. ✅ Writing Style: When writing a professional CV, you tailor it to the job description using relevant keywords and phrases. An academic CV requires that you highlight academic achievements, such as degrees, awards, scholarships, etc. ✅ Sections: The sections in both CVs also have some differences. A professional CV includes relevant sections such as a professional summary, work experience, skills, and education while an academic CV includes sections such as research statements, teaching experience, publications etc. ✅ Use: Professional CVs are used for non-academic job applications, while academic CVs are used for academic purposes such as academic and research positions, academic job applications, grant and funding applications, etc. . . . 📍 I create both professional and academic CVs that capture your achievements and skills perfectly. Step 3 - Attaching your Resume when applying to an Online Teaching position. What's the difference between a CV and a Resume? CV - Is a complete overview of your entire professional career. Resume - Is an overview of the work history related to the position you're applying for. Imagine working as a Hiring Manager at a company and looking at Teacher Applications the whole day. Some days you receive between 50 - 300 Applications per day. In order to look at each candidate's Resume within a normal work day, you can't spend more than 40 seconds on each Resume. So sending a 4 Page CV and listing your Online Teaching related information on Page 3 means that you run the risk of the Hiring Manager not seeing the information. This is one reason why sending a Resume is better. Hope this helps😁 Teacher's Pet. As an undergrad, while chasing excellent results and aiming to graduate at the top of your class, ensure you learn the basics of writing a good CV or Resume. After that, I learn how to write competitive essays. As for CV, no lecturer will teach that in school. On the other hand, some writing courses will expose and give you the foundations of writing well. So, ensure you use them well; don’t just get good grades and run away. Remember, there’s a huge difference between getting good grades and having these soft skills. Another critical thing you have to do is to get mentors who are doing well in your field (both in the industry and academia). This will help gain clarity before you graduate and it will accelerate your career path. These past few years and even recently, I have been engaging with recent graduates who can’t put a CV, let alone write good essays. This post is not for everyone, but those who plan to elevate their careers and have plans for grad school should, as a matter of urgency, begin to unlearn and relearn so many things that will be useful as they transition into other areas in society. #Gradschool #Careergrowth #Skills
