S.C.A.R.Y If you've recently gone from an individual contributor to a manager, you might be thinking what on earth have I done? I've made a real mistake here. This job is really stressful and I'm not enjoying it. that's really normal. A lot of people experience this. You're not alone in going through this. The transition from IC to manager is a huge leap and often a really different set of skills is needed and it can feel really scary at times. So S, you switch roles often. One day you're having to manage a process. The next day you're having to do some IC work again. Then you're having to support a team member to be motivated. Then you're having to support another team member who's going through something at home and it feels a little bit like pseudo-counselling. C, competing priorities. You're now stuck in the middle between the priorities of the company, the priorities of your manager, the priorities of customers, the priorities of your team and your own priorities as well. A, you're expected to be all-knowing. Because you're in the middle and you've got connections to so many different parts of the organisation, people expect you to have the answer at the tip of your tongue straight away. Of course that's unfair but people still expect it. R, you've got to learn how to regulate your own emotions and everybody else's as well. Y, you're not going to be given the training to do any of those things. So many managers get thrown in at the deep end and they'll be met with, well I hired you for that reason, I expect you to work it out yourself.
