#Nigeria: The Visual Power of Preserved History [Subscribers received a longer version of this last week) The archive of FESTAC '77, stored at the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) in Lagos, contains a wealth of materials from the significant cultural event that took place almost 50 years ago, including 1200 reels of 16mm film. Thanks to the National Council of Arts & Culture, Nigeria, led by Director-General Obi Asika, for drawing attention to it via this video clip with an awed Asika touring the storage aisles. I must say that there's a visceral impact in actually seeing these archives, cases upon cases of 16mm film reels, even if only through a video clip on Instagram. This visual evidence of a well-maintained repository of cultural artifacts, particularly film, is refreshing. It's a tangible counterpoint to the often-repeated story of loss and neglect in the African context. It should go without saying, but yet I feel like it must be said that (surprise!), there are pockets of well-preserved African cultural history waiting to be rediscovered. The stereotype does have some basis in reality that's ultimately rooted in colonialism and its legacy and is more complex and nuanced than often portrayed. Yes, there are real challenges facing preservation efforts across Africa, particularly film preservation. There are also ongoing efforts to preserve the FESTAC '77 archives, but specific focus on digitizing the particularly delicate film reels is not yet detailed. In the end, the power of visualization in this context cannot be overstated. It's not just about the information or the facts; it's about the emotional impact and the shift in perception that comes from visual proof.

In some translations and writings that we proofread at Munyal Translation Consultants, there are regular errors in the use of "historic" and "historical". Something is *historical* when it has gone down in history, it has been recorded or kept in history. *Historic* is used for something important or unique, the first of its kind. #MunyalTranslation #Translation #Proofreading

Dubliner, Dionysius Lardner, seems to have been a "problematic character", but he did have the virtue of promoting #science and the #PursuitOfKnowledge which were redeeming factors in our view He was born 231 years ago #OnThisDay. Great to see this article published (open) in Poetics: Journal of Empirical Research on Culture, the Media and the Arts. Bear rewilding in Europe has many facets and the article (jointly with Carlo Berti) analyses local media and a couple of documentaries (on Trentino and the Pyrenees cases) which renewed the narratives and gave voice to less listened actors. The article reflects on the agency of rural communities and the need of better communication before/during/after decision making processes. Publishing in such a prestigious title is a great achievement too for our research project Ruralim at Universitat Rovira i Virgili. #documentaries #rewilding #bears #agenticrural

The research work, published in David Publishing, Wilmington, USA, zeroes in on deciphering purported Egyptian link of Roma Community. The premise of the research paper is to decode the myth and revisit the fact in regard to the so-called Egyptian tie of the Roma communities through piecing together classical and modern documents, scholarly works, literature and books. It critically analyzes mendacious premises and mythological rhetoric and also addresses the argument premised upon Roma’s peripatetic lifestyle, fortune-telling vocation and their professions like bear keeping, animal training, sieve/basket making and jugglery. https://lnkd.in/gPjYJPWP
