Join us at the British Hydropower Association's Hydro Network this Wednesday! Senior Sales Manager Harry Driscoll will be speaking about the use of FishSafe turbines for downstream passage.
Harry will speak on the Session 3 panel from 13:45 - 15:15 alongside Olly Paish of DERWENT HYDROELECTRIC POWER LIMITED, Laura Weldon PhD of The eDNA Consultancy, and Jonathan Bolland of University of Hull.
As the UK targets 100% low-carbon electricity by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2050, hydropower remains essential for a reliable renewable grid, offering crucial peaking and balancing services. However, over half of the UK's hydro plants are over 60 years old and need upgrades to meet new environmental regulations.
At Natel Energy, we design FishSafe turbines to modernize these plants with minimal updates to existing equipment. Our FishSafe runners are efficient (over 90%) and cost-effective, designed to ensure safe fish passage without requiring traditional exclusion measures like fine screens. These turbines feature thick, forward-swept blades that minimize fish contact and reduce strike severity, operating effectively at sites between 2-40 meters in head.
Natel runners are equally well-suited for new build projects, which must also meet heightened environmental regulations. FishSafe turbines, currently operational at hydropower plants in the US and Austria, have demonstrated 98-100% survival rates for a variety of species and life stages of fish in a variety of field and laboratory tests: https://lnkd.in/dc5wRawf
Safe through-turbine passage could be crucial for species like the European eel, whose populations have plummeted due to disrupted migration routes. Traditional methods to aid eel migration, such as exclusion screens and seasonal shutdowns, increase costs and reduce power generation.
By upgrading old turbines with FishSafe runners and choosing FishSafe turbines for new projects, we can increase power production, preserve biodiversity, and lower costs, aligning hydropower with the UK's net-zero and biodiversity goals. This balanced approach ensures that hydropower continues to play a key role in a sustainable energy future. Contact us at info@natelenergy.com to learn more.

GLOBAL HYDROPOWER DAY 2024
Global Hydropower Day is celebrated annually on October 11. The International Hydropower Association (IHA) leads the day, with support from a global coalition of industry associations, developers, operators, and manufacturers.
The day's activities include:
Sharing videos, case studies, and stories about the benefits of hydropower..
Highlighting the hydropower workforce and its role in keeping the lights on!
Featuring videos of a typical day in a hydropower plant.
Hydropower is the world's oldest renewable energy source and plays a vital role in the transition to a net-zero future. It can work well with solar and wind power, especially when the wind isn't blowing.
This Year 2024 Theme:
"To highlight the positive impact of sustainable hydropower on the world's communities and people.
Happy Global Hydropower Day!

Thank you to all of our speakers who took part in our webinar, "A Roadmap for Better, Faster Hydropower Development in Europe," covering an in-depth analysis of the hydropower outlook in Europe.
Insights shared included:
🔔 Electricity systems cannot be operated without varied reserve options. Hydropower digitalisation started in the 80s but in the last 20 years the energy mix has had a revolution, things are totally different now.
🔔 Plants are ageing faster given they are being operated in a different way to the way they were originally designed. This is why modernisation is crucial.
🔔 The difference in revenue you can make in a non-flexible vs flexible power plants has increased from 15% 5 or 6 years ago to 50% now, so flexibility is being rewarded. We are still missing capacity for longer term duration storage, to cover the 'dunkelflaute' where the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow.
🔔 In Europe hydro operators can now agree pricing based on cap and floor mechanisms.
🔔 The proposed new Cap and Floor scheme in the UK offers good opportunities for global investments in the UK energy market.

Great video from the National Hydropower Association which demonstrates the importance of hydropower and the role it has to play in the clean energy grid.
Hydropower is often the 'forgotten' renewable energy source for a number of reasons, being overshadowed by the rapid growth and public attention given to other renewable sources like wind and solar power in recent years.
There is also a perception that most economically viable hydropower sites have already been developed, limiting further growth potential. This is of course incorrect. In the US alone for example, a DOE assessment found that adding hydropower generating equipment to existing non-powered dams could provide up to 12GW of new hydropower capacity from around 50,000 suitable dams currently used for other purposes like water supply regulation.
That's why spreading the word on the potential and benefits of hydropower is so important.
