Absolutely thrilled to explore the fresh approaches Austin is taking towards its explosion in urban growth! 🚀🏙️ Stepping away from traditional reliance on highways, the city is making substantial moves toward enhancing alternative transportation options. This includes increased funding for biking, walking, and public transit aimed to elevate quality of life and sustainability.🚶♂️🚴🚌 Super intriguing is how these initiatives not only aim to decongest roads but also connect communities more effectively and revitalize urban spaces. This demonstrates how cities can pivot toward more holistic planning that benefits all residents. I'm excited to see the transformation and discuss how these ideas can be applied in other growing cities. How is your city adapting to urban expansion? https://buff.ly/4h4orrX Let’s share thoughts and experiences! 👇 #Mobility #SmartCities #UrbanPlanning #Sustainability #Innovation

🚦 **More Roads = More Traffic.** It's a concept known as "Induced Demand." When we build more roads, we often think it will reduce congestion. However, the opposite tends to happen. Increased road capacity can lead to more traffic as people change their driving behavior and more vehicles hit the road. This isn't just a theory—it's a well-documented phenomenon in urban planning and transportation studies. The more roads we build, the more traffic we attract, essentially leading to the same or even worse congestion levels we originally aimed to alleviate. So, what’s the solution? It might be time to rethink our approach to transportation infrastructure. Investing in public transit, promoting carpooling, and encouraging alternative modes of transportation like cycling and walking can help manage traffic more sustainably and effectively. What are your thoughts or experiences with induced demand? Have you seen this phenomenon in action where you live or work? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I've seen this firsthand in my city. We expanded a major highway a few years back, thinking it would ease traffic. Fast forward to today, and it's just as congested as before! I totally agree that we need to shift our focus. Public transit has been a game-changer for me. I started taking the bus to work, and not only do I avoid traffic stress, but I also get some reading done during my commute. Win-win! Have you noticed any cities successfully tackling this issue? I'd love to hear about some positive examples where alternative transportation methods have made a real difference. Maybe we could learn from their strategies and push for similar changes in our own communities. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ #UrbanPlanning #SustainableTransportation #InducedDemand #TrafficManagement #PublicTransit

From NACTO (National Association of City Transportation Officials) Key Themes City practitioners are making powerful changes across North America. NACTO was founded on the belief in the possibility of transformative changes, and our cities are reaping the benefits of those transformations. Among these: Philadelphia has doubled bike trips while reducing total injury crashes by 17% with separated bike lanes. In Washington, D.C., one street’s bus priority and safety improvement project reduced speeding at school arrival and dismissal from 100 vehicles per hour to less than one. The City of Greenville, South Carolina has reduced crashes by 42% in less than 10 years with Complete Streets improvements. And, of course, Hoboken has had zero fatalities on its streets for seven years in a row! Our ideas are percolating into state DOT and federal guidelines. Our cities shared their experiences advocating for better federal traffic control standards and celebrated the results: the new edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) makes it easier to implement NACTO design guidelines, set speed zones, install crosswalks, and use colored pavement markings. And cities are partnering with their state DOTs to improve communication, get the funding they need, and make streets safer. Miami-Dade embodies the challenges and opportunities of North American cities. The county is addressing issues that are recognizable to many of our member cities: roadway safety, climate change, equity, housing demand, shifting travel patterns, a challenging political climate, and threats to marginalized communities. Someone else is also working on it. whether developing Safe Routes to School programs, managing the (many) demands at the curb, building an outreach team, or trying to improve your organizational structure, there are resources and examples for city practitioners of all stripes to draw from. We can keep moving forward even when we face obstacles. Veronica Davis showed us how focusing on small successes if we can’t move forward with ambitious projects can begin to provide the momentum for that larger work. Can’t move forward BRT because of funding or lack of political support? Focus on improving bus stops, and plan for a future when you have the backing for transformative projects. Last night the North Miami City Council voted to advance the 2045 Mobility Action Plan & Mobility Fee to 2nd reading. The Action Plan emphasizes first & last mile multimodal connectivity to future planned rail stations at NE 125 & NE 151st. The Mobility Action plan includes Pedestrian Priority Streets, Curbless Shared Streets, Green Streets, Multimodal Corridors, Traffic Calming & Water Taxi routes. The Mobility Fee features a single rate per square ft for residential uses, regadless of type of use. This helps to keep smaller unit affordable versus a flat rate per dwelling and also prepares the City for increasing teardowns of older homes and construction of larger single family homes. The Mobility Fee also addresses the impact of high trip generating land uses and the components of these uses that have the most impact of the City’s transportation system. The final adoption hearing is scheduled in November. Stay tuned. We keep building more bigger roads and flyovers but are we actually addressing the real problem in our cities? Are we actually solving the problem of congestion and traffic? As our cities grow, traffic will too. More highways incentivezes more driving leading to more traffic. The actual problem is not solved. Citizens should be incentivised to walk(pedestrian centric city planning can ensure this), use cycles and public transportation. Our cities need to be less car dependent. And city planning needs to be centred around citizen movement. Urban planners ! Would love to hear your opinions on same. #xplor #publiccommute #urbanplanning #cities #suburban

Twin Cities Boulevard is practical, not radical. Toole Design Group, Visible City, Smart Mobility, and Our Streets released a new report today analyzing the feasibility of a highway-to-boulevard conversion in the Twin Cities. The Rethinking I-94 project is one of the most consequential infrastructure projects in Twin Cities history and will impact multiple generations. “Reimagining I-94: A Report on Reparative Highway Alternatives & Evaluation Metrics” addresses how removing I-94 would work, what it might look like, and what the community benefits would be. It also provides recommendations to ensure that the Minnesota Department of Transportation evaluates highway removal options accurately and fairly. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gtWUPJEx
