Can you be the "true you" and be successful (without having to overcome additional hurdles) if you don't tick the 'traditional boxes'? OK so this is a post about accent. It's something I've grappled with personally, not just early in my working life, but right now in my day to day. It hits me all the time actually. As someone who grew up in Chingford (on the East London / Essex borders), who is not well spoken - even when I try hard to put on my very best work voice... I've often *felt* judged. And, I know from the odd loose comment here or there over the years that I have absolutely *been* judged, based on how I speak. A version of this video 👇 popped up in my feed on *another* social media channel. It sang to me a bit and it struck a few chords (no puns intended). Why? As a fan of #SortYourLifeOut and an admirer of Stacey Solomon's gift in putting people in relatively exposing circumstances at complete ease - in an empathetic and non-judgemental way, it struck me that the self-deprecating humour and warmth we see (and many of us love) on TV screens today has been there right from the start. She's succeeded - and is loved by many - because of who she is when she is her authentic self. Despite (as the audition shows) being judged - by everyone - initially, based on her accent. So who cares about the X-Factor (for the record: usually, not me) and is there any actual value in an X-Factor throw-back? Unexpectedly, I think for this one, yes there is! It's a reminder that we do judge based on accent - and that's problematic. And that many of us feel judged based on the way we speak. But personally, it's also got me thinking that maybe, just maybe, it's time to carry a little less shame about my how I speak and my mannerisms. And it's definitely time to drop the "posh" work phone voice. https://lnkd.in/d_2EzV5Q

✨ Pro tip: take that interview request that seems slightly off topic for what you normally do. You could end up stretching yourself and learning new skills. You could also tap into a new audience, like I did with this interview. That video now has over 8K views on my YouTube channel and comments from folks saying it was one of the better interviews they'd seen for this movie. Check it out and let me know what you think! #TBT #ThrowbackThursday #EntertainmentNews #YouTubeChannel
