The Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) recently organized a gathering of developers in Varanasi, where many expressed keen interests in commencing projects in this spiritual hub, given the substantial demand. Moreover, the government of #UttarPradesh is actively acquiring land in these religious cities to develop theme-based townships. For instance, a 1,000-acre township blending contemporary and traditional architectural styles is planned for Ayodhya. Since the groundbreaking ceremony for the grand temple dedicated to Lord Ram in August 2020, land prices and property transactions in #Ayodhya have surged by approximately 50%. The inauguration of the temple in January 2024 is expected to draw 80,000-100,000 visitors daily, according to estimates from the Ram Temple Trust. Today we shall take a look at the wadas of Maharashtra. Wada in Marathi denotes a large mansion and the term is said to have been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘vata’ which means a plot or a piece of land meant for a house. These courtyard houses were prevalent nationwide under various names and local styles. This form received patronage from the Maratha rulers in the 17th century and the Peshwas after that. The courtyard is a vast square brimming with sunlight and at the centre a podium holds a Tulsi plant. The veranda runs along the edge supported by pillars providing a glimpse of living within the house. These buildings represent the turbulence and tradition of the era in which they were built. Some are magnificent structures, while others are private and solitary on the banks of rivers. Features from Mughal, Rajasthan and Gujrat architecture all find their presence in the local construction techniques. The structure ensured optimum circulation of air and light and also offered privacy to the inmates. Generally, the wadas belonging to the trading communities were highly ornamented while the ones belonging to the Brahmins were plainer. The doors for instance were a symbol of opulence, colours and decoration making the wealth apparent. The brackets (end details of a beam) also had intricate carvings, details from the family heritage or dragons and lotus – the variations were many. Wall niches are also found where candles/diyas were put to protect the light from the wind. Some of the most notable wadas include Shaniwar Wada, Dhepe Wada, Vishrambaug Wada, Kesari Wada, Bhor Rajwada, and Purandare Wada. Follow us for more such stories.
