Gumption Education: Conservatorship "A conservatorship, also known as guardianship in some jurisdictions, is a legal arrangement in which a responsible person or organization is appointed by a court to manage the financial affairs, personal care, or both, of an individual who is unable to do so independently due to age, illness, disability, or other factors. Conservatorships are established when other alternatives are insufficient, and they involve strict legal safeguards to protect the rights of the individual involved. BREAKING! A threat averted in Texas (again). This is a sneaky-important ruling. Make no mistake. Group like SFFA are not simply opposed to so-called "racial preferences". They are opposed to opportunity--plain and simple. That's why they weren't satisfied when UT-Austin dropped race as a factor in admissions following the Harvard/UNC decision. They continued pressing the court to require UT to have a completely race-blind admissions process. that would have gone much further than the Supreme Court required and would also contradict common-sense. We are glad to see their vision of "colorblind blind racism" was rejected by the court. This win is good reminder that we should continue fighting for what I call our race-conscious future. Kudos to our Educational Opportunities team at Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and our co-counsel on this win. #TheFutureWeDeserve #AffirmativeAction #racialequity
Excited to share that we booted Ed Blum and SFFA out of federal court in Texas. They argued for a completely race-blind admissions process but that is not what the Supreme Court required in its ruling from last summer in SFFA v Harvard/UNC . https://lnkd.in/eUNQ9hMa

Office of the Provost: Afro-Descendant Institute of Human Rights I must preface these remarks by informing you that I am a rarity law Professor who teaches international human rights law. It is no longer intelligent to pursue race based cases in American courts as a “simple minority” when we are a “ Special indigenous minority under the laws of the Americas. There is international law that allows us to have race or ethnic based set aside schools and seats in American universities. There is also a court higher that the Federal Court called the Inter-American Court that ALL Civil Rights lawyers need to be prepared for. We can no longer allow White biased jurists who follow White Nationalist customs to strangle our educational and economic aspirations. It is “necessary” to our progress as a “Tribal People” to rethink our approach to racial discrimination in housing, land, voting, taxes, and infrastructure development. The process to assert our change of status is a self executing ballot called an “Identity establishment Plebiscite”.

This is reconciliation in action.
⚠️Trigger Alert⚠️The Indigenous Bar Association (IBA) is relieved by the defeat of Resolution 3 at the Law Society of British Columbia (LSBC), but equally disheartened by how narrowly the motion was defeated. Resolution 3, which contained troubling elements of Residential School denialism, sought to revise the LSBC’s Indigenous Cultural Competency Course by deleting a passage referencing the confirmation of unmarked burials at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. The close vote—1683 opposing and 1488 in favor—reveals a deep and concerning division within the legal profession, reflecting an alarming lack of understanding or outright denial of the lived experiences of Residential School survivors. “The near success of this resolution exposes a dangerous undercurrent in the legal profession," said IBA President Drew Lafond. "The denial of the harms caused by Residential Schools and the dismissal of Indigenous voices is not just an affront to survivors, but a glaring reminder that the work of reconciliation remains unfinished. The legal profession must do better." The IBA believes this vote underscores the urgent need for mandatory legal education on Indigenous history, legal orders, and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action, including Call to Action #27, specifically call on the legal profession to improve its cultural competency and knowledge of Indigenous issues. All lawyers, regardless of their area of practice, have a professional duty to understand these legal frameworks to uphold justice and equity in their work. Lafond added: "Indigenous rights intersect with every area of law, from constitutional matters to criminal justice, environmental law, and corporate governance. A legal profession that does not understand Indigenous laws and history is not equipped to engage meaningfully with reconciliation or uphold the rule of law in a just manner." Please contact the 24 Hour Residential School Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419 if you require emotional support..
