Amaran – what an apt title. Wish everyone to watch as I was amazed seeing Major "Mukundh" remained devoted to his passion/profession till his last breadth. Even in passing, a person can live on through work that benefits others. Soldiers at the border stand together, whether they speak Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, or Malayalam, whether they are Hindu...Christian...Jain...Muslim, from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, or Kerala. This is true Unity in Diversity, as each one focuses solely on protecting the country. There are no politics, no grandstanding – it’s do or die. While they sacrifice their lives for our safety, we often compromise on ethics, values, and morals. Imagine the struggles their families face in a society where such values are often overlooked, especially when their loved one is no longer with them. I believe it’s time for each of us to become a soldier in fighting an invisible threat: the decline of integrity that contributes to a compromised society. I aim to address this through education – not just as a means of knowledge but as a way to truly understand life. India use to be like this , India use to be like that. India developed this and that. India was spiritually advanced and blah blah blah... We feel so much pride when we say such things don't we? Well, even after this advancement we got chained by Mughals and then by Britishers. We got divided and separated. The question arises, Why that happened? Were we really that much advanced? Were we really that strong? Were we really the best civilization? If we look carefully and think critically, the history tells something else. It is time that we put aside our history books and write about the future by living in the present. We were just like any other civilization, perhaps a little bit ahead in terms of spiritual knowledge and scientific knowledge, but only a little bit 🤏. Uprising: The Liberation of Dadra and Nagar Haveli by Neelesh Kulkarni The story of Indian independence is generally known to most. The accession of Kashmir is often in discussion, while that of Hyderabad rarely comes up. Yes, we do sometimes recall how India re-possessed Goa. But then, Dadra and Nagar Haveli? Is there a story on that too that we should know? I think we must, especially after Neelesh Kulkarni narrates it with historical authenticity in this book. A casual conversation during a train journey puts him face to face with a freedom fighter who used a gun. Months of personal endeavour thereafter brought him face to face with octogenarian participants. Friends assisted in locating many resources. And, here is the story of the only armed independence movement (that too after 1947) that led to the integration of Dadra-Nagar Haveli into the Indian Union from Portugese occupation. The narration weaves international and national affairs seamlessly into the story of Azad Gomantak Dal, its associates and rivals who collectively staged an extraordinary uprising that resulted in Portugese surrender. The seven year long international legal battle and eventual accession to India are told in crisp but absorbing parts, neatly stitched into the overall story like perfectly placed jigsaw puzzles. One of the most well written and engaging historical narratives that I have ever read. Despite a marathon travel to Mangalore and back between 27 & 28th from Coimbatore, I just couldn't put it down. Neelesh Kulkarni hopes to see his grandchildren remember him when they are older, for telling this story. I pray that every young Indian student must read this now, not just to marvel at his ability to tell an absorbing story, but to recognize, recall and remain in gratitude of all those simple citizens who took up a national cause at the peril of their lives and, succeeded.
