THE MOST ABUSED WORD IN THE HOTEL VERNACULAR: LUXURY. We contend that there are many different types of luxury. There is what we call Traditional Luxury, such as Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, or The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. (there are many others). But there is a NEW type of luxury. This luxury is less about the number of moldings, the thickness of carpets, the extensive woodwork, and the staff (literally) pouring over themselves. This type of luxury is a little bit less fussy, but still enshrined in the concept of a guest-forward approach. We have coined this as Progressive Luxury. Some people say a hotel is simply a place to rest your head. I disagree. I believe a hotel can truly make or break an entire trip. When looking for a hotel, the first thing that I look for is a design-forward, aesthetically pleasing property. Who wants to stay in a property that isn't inspiring? Are the views from the windows breathtaking? Or... could this hotel simply be anywhere in the world? Does it feel like it has a sense of place for the destination with authentic elements? My personal preference is when the architecture is original. This lends to uniquely beautiful and visually inspiring spaces, and it truly gives a feel for the culture of the place you're visiting. Perhaps it's filled with unique art displays that you've never seen elsewhere in the world. Maybe it's a hotel that has been designed inside of an ancient cave or old monastery. Instead of a pool, you get to enjoy ancient thermal spas. Above all else though, location needs to be taken into strong consideration. Staying far away from the sites you wish to visit only leads to stress during travels. Oftentimes, the extra spend to be centrally located is worth sacrificing elsewhere within the budget. We look at a client's inquiry and often make alternative suggestions based on our expertise. We often lead clients to places they'd never have otherwise heard of, a bit away from the crowds and far more authentic. I'm curious... what was your best hotel experience?
