The latest incarnation of Chapel Street Jam factories officially under construction with developers breaking ground today. Traders say the multibillion dollar project with 600 apartments and two hotels will bring life back to the precinct. More from Lana Murphy. After 10 years in limbo. Day one of demolition at the Jam Factory. This will become the cultural icon it always was. That's the promise from the developer footing the $3.5 billion bill to redefine the former jewel in Melbourne. Crown Chapel Street really struggled with the jam factory quiet. First built as a brewery, then an actual I XL Jam Factory, its official opening was in 1979. Linda Strawberry smell of the brand. It quickly became the place to be and be seen everyone that comes to Melbourne. They don't want to come to Chapel Street. I actually remember when I worked here at Village Cinemas back in the day and we'd have red carpet events and you know, get all the A list celebrities through here. Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley, Owen Wilson, Isla Fisher, Ashton Kutcher and Zach Efron among the movie stars to grace the entertainment capital. Even Borat got a gig and Richard Branson, who opened the first Virgin Megastore in 2002. It was a destination for everyone. That's the goal again. By the end of 2029, there'll be 5 towers. 600 apartments to luxury hotels and 30,000 square metres of office, retail and dining space. The stained glass skylight is sadly disappearing. But other heritage elements that make this place so special will remain, including this century old chimney that will be relocated to what the developer is calling a public realm. And for veteran traders, it'll be a very welcome blast from the past. This is exciting. People are gonna come down and stay and then do their shopping on Chapel Street. Brilliant! This is an incredibly exciting and much needed development. Let’s hope the Stonnington Council and local policing authorities follow suit and invest into the local community to bring Chapel Street and the surrounding area back from the brink of complete chaos and lawlessness.
