Leather alternatives take 89% of the Next Gen material investment. And it’s easy to see why; the leather industry was valued at US$394 billion in 2020! And synthetic leathers make up less than 9% of that market. Even with all the faux leather jackets SHEIN sells! There were a range of different alternative leathers on display at The Sustainable Angle Future Fabrics Expo last week. Development seems to be firmly in the vegan camp! But are we seeing enough development in the creation of actual leather skins for reduced emissions? Some of the leather experts I’ve spoken to think no. While there is no doubt we have to reduce the number of cows globally (I read there are more cows than people, but I haven’t fact checked that). And we need to move to a regenerative agriculture to limit the demand for soy (cows eat most of the soy produced!). But is the low hanging fruit not in the material development stage instead? Are we expecting ranchers to take on too much of the burden? We aren’t going to stop eating beef, so surely we should still be using their skins? I find supply chain fascinating, and none more so than the complex world of leather! When building our supply chain, we were so focused on our fabric that we overlooked an essential part of every garment—sewing thread. We just assumed we could find 100% organic cotton thread that was grown and spun in America. Turns out… it didn’t exist. Everything was either grown in India and spun in America, or the other way around. But one of our core principles is that our products don’t travel overseas during their supply chain. People told us to just “Deal with it… It’s the norm… It’s less than 1% of your garment… You don’t have to share that information.” But we couldn’t justify having our thread travel across the world for something so small. So… We took the risk and we made our own! And it’s pretty darn magical.
