Modern farming methods—think mechanization, genetically modified crops, and agrochemicals—defeat hunger wherever they are implemented. Unfortunately, these practices also have an environmental cost, leading certain activists to condemn them outright. In reality, however, low-tech alternatives to modern agriculture are often far worse, for both humans and the environment. One of the best things we could do for the environment would be to modernize agriculture even further. The environmental scientist Jesse Ausubel has noted that if every farmer adopted modern techniques, “an area the size of India or the USA east of the Mississippi could be released globally from agriculture over the next 50 years or so.” Indeed, this transition has already begun.
