The African private capital industry demonstrated resilience in the face of highly volatile macroeconomic conditions. After an outlier year in 2022 marked by a frenzied venture capital investment activity, the industry embarked on a journey towards deal stability and normalcy. In this environment, 2023 emerged as the second strongest year on record in terms of deal volume, surpassing both the average number of deals (264) reported from 2012 to 2022 and the average of 387 deals from 2019 to 2022. Ahead of the upcoming AVCA Conference and VC Summit, we provide insight into Africa’s dealmaking activity by sector according to AVCA’s recently released 2023 African Private Capital Activity Report. Last week our Managing Partner Yvonne Ofosu-Appiah, CertIoD spoke at the 20th Annual AVCA - The African Private Capital Association Conference & VC Summit in Johannesburg on the theme, "Fortifying the Future: The Critical Role of Emerging Managers". Sharing the panel with Ennis Rimawi, Isabelle Bébéar, Rui Oliveira and moderated by Simone Baur, it was a great opportunity to share the work and unique experiences of Sahara Impact Ventures investing in early stage businesses at the nexus of gender and climate and how we attract dealflow. Yvonne shared insights on the following (i) Main challenges faced by emerging fund managers and what interventions could be helpful in supporting their fundraising journey. (ii) How GP accelerator programs are useful and support emerging fund managers with LP introductions, training and capacity building , warehousing support among others to accelerate their fund close (iii) How innovations around shared back office services could support fund managers reduce their running costs and be more efficient. How do VC funds value their portfolio companies through the holding period? Professor Claudia Zeisberger and David G Munro, Head of Research at 5 Quadrants, co-authored a recent report highlighting this. Titled, “VC Valuation in MENA: A Reality Check,” the research was commissioned by Jada Fund of Funds, and takes a deep dive into the common methodologies employed by venture capitalists. Based on extensive research across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the report offers insights into the policies, practices, concerns and aspirations of the participants in MENA’s rapidly developing private capital markets. We just wrapped up an insightful final session for our Conceptualizing the Fund Module, titled "Dissecting the Fund: Strategies for Success", featuring Paola Ravacchioli. Our fellows explored the intricacies of fund structures, objectives, and key elements, learning practical strategies for fund success. They engaged in comprehensive analysis and discussions on how to tailor fund narratives, align with investment objectives, and meet investor expectations. Paola, a retired Senior Investment Officer at the European Investment Bank (EIB), brought a wealth of knowledge to the table. Her expertise, particularly in fund of funds investments, has been instrumental in developing innovative initiatives like Boost Africa, the Space for Med Acceleration Programme, and the MENA Seed Accelerators Facility. Currently, she advises fund managers globally and is involved with the International Climate Finance Accelerator (ICFA), ANAVA, 2X Ignite Africa GP Sprint, and our very own program: ifada. Tomorrow, our fellows will dive into the final module of their program, where they will learn how to construct their story and present to LPs. I participated at the recently concluded 2nd Annual PEVCA Conference themed, 'The Next Frontier: Private Capital Opportunities in a Shifting Economic Landscape.'    The conference provided a pivotal platform for insightful discussions on navigating Nigeria's economic landscape and global Private Equity and Venture Capital impacts.   During the panel discussion on 'Gateway to Accessing Capital,' we explored innovative strategies aimed at making the asset class more attractive and fostering ecosystem development.
