Already very soon, the Summit of the Future will take place in NYC. So many colleagues have invested their time and energy into this process, and while I was also deeply involved, I’ve decided not to attend in person. I want to reflect on the challenges we face today by quoting Javier Surasky: "Despite this, observing the debates and the inability to adopt concrete steps that lead to the necessary changes to respond to our current common challenges, we are facing the most incapable generation of world leaders in history. 'Leaders' who, despite having the scientific information on what needs to be done and the resources to do it, continue to opt for the most brutal inaction, wrapped up in international squabbles representing their small and myopic worlds." It seems like this summit will be another missed opportunity for our leaders to do their job. We as civil society were more or less kept out of the room, in order not to disturb pointless conversations. My country – Russian Federation – is also a significant distractor and contributor to global degradation. Yet, if the underlying inaction continues, it’s on us – civil society – to deal with the consequences. EVENT | B For Good Leaders Yesterday, B For Good Leaders from all over the world gathered in #Amsterdam for the first day of the B for Good Leader Summit. The main theme of the Summit 2024 is ‘Business for Good in Action’. The program covers corporate activism, leadership, tech for good, B Corp and beyond, tech regenerative economy, the food system change, and sustainable finance. Amsterdam Impact was present to join in on conversations about impact-driven companies in Amsterdam and the regenerative economy. Eva Gladek, CEO at Metabolic gave an inspiring talk about the ecosystem approach to tackle implementation gaps on things like market development and capital, Rutger Bregman talked about the three ingredients of moral ambition (a new definition of success, focus on maximum impact, and relentless prioritizing), and Werner Schouten spoke about intergenerational leadership and asked the question: what if we work together until 2100? I'm pleased to share insights from a recent gathering of leaders in construction, engineering, and energy sectors. The event featured two impressive keynote speakers and emphasized the urgent need for equality in these industries. I anticipate that the round-table discussions will lead to some great initiatives, promoting diversity in engineering through collaboration. The statistic that only 19% of engineering graduates are female, with just 3.8% from Australia, highlights the necessity of educating young people about the promising opportunities in engineering and improving retention strategies. Some other key points from the event include: 👉 Leadership is crucial as a catalyst for change. 👉 Diversity benefits everyone in the workforce. 👉 Cultivating a culture where individuals feel empowered to speak up is essential.
