Medienspiegel: Unser diesjähriger Prognosen-Check im Skeptical Inquirer. 📰 "The yearly #GWUP forecast check once again confirms that forecasters’ predictions do not demonstrate prophetic abilities. Important events were predicted rarely (Trump’s re-election) or not at all (the fall of Syrian ruler Assad). Many predictions, such as the attack of a giant giraffe or the collapse of the Eiffel Tower, were more amusing than serious. The few accurate predictions, such as snake attacks in Florida or seaquakes in the Pacific, can easily be explained by statistical considerations and the regular occurrence of the predicted events. Scientifically based methods (such as so-called “superforecasting” and prediction markets) perform better than clairvoyants and fortune tellers." PUTIN’S PARANOIA? What is going on in the new Imperial Soviet Empire? A prominent Russian scientist specialising in hypersonic technology has been sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of treason. His conviction, with three others in the recent past, is the latest in a series of arrests targeting researchers since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, in what experts are calling a politically motivated crackdown on scientists Putin had previously boasted that Russia had hypersonic missiles that were superior to any that the ’West’ and especially America, possessed But now these scientist have been accused and tried in secret of passing on the knowledge to other scientists at overseas conferences. That the information was already in the public domain has not deterred Putin from giving these mean severe sentences. Since 2018 a total of 11 have been the target of his ‘wrath’. This is a very vindictive way of targeting scientists. Most of them are older/old men with at least one terminally ill. This relentless pursuit of scientists involved in the development of hypersonic missiles demonstrates the behaviour of an increasingly paranoid and isolated regime. And astonishingly, this ‘vendetta’ targets not only those suspected of ‘conspiring’ with the West but also of sharing information with countries considered friendly to Moscow?! Really – why? The arrests also reflect the secret services' effort to maintain their relevance by stoking the regime's paranoia and the charge of treason means Putin gives the FSB additional power of arrest, detention and to say nothing It has also been posited these scientists are merely pawns in a larger game of influence within the Kremlin. Whatever the real reason(s) it seems all is not well in Putin’s ‘Dystopia’.

Research Paper: "Patterns of Hybrid Warfare in Central Asian Region: Case Study of Russo-Ukrainian Crisis (1991-2019)" Authors: Minaahil Kamran and Isma Khizar Abstract: The nature of conflict between the states of this holistically realistic world order has changed as it no longer allows the states to adopt covert means to undermine their adversary; however, the character of conflict has endured. This is where the notion of ‘hybrid warfare’ comes into play. This research paper aims to explore the Russian theory of hybrid warfare which is significantly distinct from that of the Western understanding of ‘hybrid warfare’. The policy of ‘fortressing’ Russia has made several eastern European states a playing field for Moscow, and country which got affected the most appears to be Ukraine. Russia’s use of ‘soft power’ in Ukraine has been a major impediment to its economic and socio-political stagnation. The ‘chaos strategy’ and the ‘escalate to de-escalate’ strategy in the Russian military thinking drives Russia’s hybrid warfare in Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Alarmingly, Russia is adopting the same strategy with its Central Asian neighbors which have become a grave concern for academic circles with the continuous militarization of Russia in Ukraine and accelerating the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The growing prominence of Central Asian region with the economic expansionism of China and increasing militarization of US as a consequence of its withdrawal from Afghanistan might trigger the insecurities of Russia in this region and might end up escalating Russian hybrid warfare to a full scale confrontation with CAR(s). This research paper suggests the Escalation Control Model, the Comprehensive Security Model and the adoption of cross domain strategies along with the employment of DIMEL instruments to counter the of hybrid warfare, specifically of Russia, in Central Asian Region. The qualitative method of study has been adopted in this study along with utilizing primary as well as secondary sources of data which helped analyzing the Russian hybrid war theory and the future ramifications of this notion not only in Ukraine but also the very strategically outpouring – the Central Asian region.

Pleased to announce the publication of a new open access book, Modelling the Logistics of Mantzikert, with Philip Murgatroyd, John Haldon and Georgios Theodoropoulos - https://lnkd.in/eqbThwVX Central to the work is the battle of Mantzikert. In 1071, the Byzantine Emperor, Romanos IV Diogenes, set out from Constantinople for the eastern borders of his Empire with an army described as “more numerous than the sands of the sea”. His military campaign culminated in defeat by the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan at the Battle of Mantzikert. This defeat was to have profound consequences for both Byzantine and Turkish history and is still commemorated in the modern state of Turkey. Yet the historical sources for this campaign contain significant gaps and we know more about the political intrigues surrounding the emperor than we do about how the army moved and fed itself. The ‘Medieval Warfare on the Grid’ project (2007-2011) was funded by an AHRC-EPSRC-Jisc e-Science grant and set out to use computer simulation to shed new light on the Mantzikert campaign. In this book we present the results of the project and demonstrate that computer simulation has an important role to play in the analysis of pre-modern military logistics. It can give new context to historical sources, present new options for the interpretation of past events and enable questions of greater complexity to be asked of historical military campaigns. It can also highlight the similarities that exist across time and space when armies need to be mobilised, moved and fed. Enjoy!

Ukraine, a country in Eastern Europe, produces over 90% of the neon that the US requires to make chips. This raises the question of whether this could be a reason for the US support for Ukraine or even a motivation for Russia's invasion in Ukraine. The dependency of countries on each other for raw materials and technology is a significant geopolitical risk. #Ukraine #US #Russia #geopolitics #technology #rawmaterials

"If there is verified information about NHI, it should not be the sole preserve of governments. Humanity has a moral right to know. Furthermore, concealing information of this magnitude is not a viable long-term solution, as it is likely to be revealed eventually. If this happens abruptly and in an uncontrolled manner, it could lead to significant societal disruption. This could occur through a variety of means, such as the government of the United States, an adversary, a scientific study, or even NHI themselves (should they exist). The UK government can manage the risk of uncontrolled disclosure by actively developing a careful plan to release and discuss information on UAP. This will take being proactive rather than reactive, engaging with our allies, and carefully planning for a post-disclosure world." - Helen McCaw, Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena - Policy Implications for the Government of the United Kingdom | Sol Foundation White Paper Volume 1, No. 3.
