🛫💧 French Start-Up Successfully Flies Hydrogen-Electric Aeroplane 🌐 The French Start-Up Beyond Aero has successfully undertaken France's first ever hydrogen-electric flight with their G1 aviation machine retrofitted with a fuel cell propulsion system. This test marks the beginning of a comprehensive programme that aims to deliver a six seater business jet by 2030, of course powered by renewable hydrogen for zero emissions. 💬 Praise by our Managing Director France, Julien Marteau: "This is great news for the French aviation industry. The French government has put strong focus in decarbonising aviation with SAF like e-Kerosene. This will account for 65% of the net-zero CO2 trajectory by 2050. For general aviation, a hydrogen fuel cell jet could be an alternative in a near future. Dave Kettner, the president of #Madison-based Virent, Inc, doesn’t make a habit of hanging out with international celebrities, but he did so last fall on a transatlantic flight with billionaire Sir Richard Branson. It helped that Kettner’s firm supplied much of the #sustainable #aviation fuel that entirely powered Virgin Atlantic’s “Flight 100” in November 2023, the first such transatlantic crossing by a commercial airline. So, what kind of person was Branson? Kettner recalled an energetic man who spent much of the eight-hour flight on his feet engaging with other passengers. But the real star was Virent’s BioForm fuel, which can be made from all types of plant-based material and safely dropped into jet engine tanks without the need to blend with conventional fuels. It’s one example of innovation in the aviation industry taking place in #Wisconsin, which already has a rich history of powered flight “firsts” that range from fighter pilot aces to early astronauts to the world-renowned air show of the EAA in #Oshkosh. The kind of transformation underway in Wisconsin and elsewhere today has a chance to alter the carbon-based footprint of the #industry through new fuels, new engines and new ways to move people and cargo through airports. Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Could Germany Follow Singapore's Lead? Singapore recently announced plans to mandate the use of sustainable aviation fuel for all departing flights starting in 2026, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This ambitious move raises the question of whether Germany could take similar steps. With already ambitious climate goals in place, Germany is actively promoting the development of sustainable technologies, including alternative fuels for aviation. While German airlines have taken some initiatives to integrate sustainable fuels, further legislation and regulations may be necessary to facilitate widespread adoption. Close collaboration between government, industry, and other stakeholders would be crucial to steer the aviation sector toward sustainability and achieve long-term emission reductions.
