Community Health Workers (CHWs) play an essential role in bridging the gap between healthcare providers and the communities they serve. Through their embedded, place-based approach, CHWs understand the unique needs and challenges of their communities, providing personalized support, education, and resources. Their efforts are crucial to addressing social determinants of health – effectively promoting health equity, improving access to care, and fostering trust within the community. By empowering CHWs, we can make significant strides in tackling issues like housing, food security, and mental health, ultimately building healthier, more resilient communities. Grassroots Health Revolution in Surrey A recent case study by the NHS Confederation, published on 8th October, unveils the inspiring "Growing Health Together" initiative that's turning heads in East Surrey. It's an approach that places the power of healthcare transformation firmly in the hands of the community. Here, five neighborhoods have banded together—GPs, schools, and residents—to tackle the root causes of health issues. The aim? To shift away from merely treating symptoms to fostering genuine wellbeing and resilience within communities. This grassroots alliance delivers real results with initiatives like senior exercise classes and improved mental health support. The outcome? Fewer GP visits and more robust health for all. As the University of Kent embarks on evaluating the long-term impact, there’s hope that what’s happening in Surrey could influence wider systemic change, setting a new benchmark for community-led health solutions. #SurreyTransformation #NHS #Healthcare #CommunityHealth #HealthAndWellbeing #PrimaryCare #HealthTransformation #NHSLeadership https://lnkd.in/ekVEi8yH

One last paper to share to close out 2024! We examined the structural supports and challenges for community health workers (CHWs) from the perspective of institutional representatives and policymakers. We found that while CHWs are highly valued by leaders, they are systematically undervalued in #government and #healthcare sectors. Institutions must do more to build relational capital with CHWs and their organizations. Equitable pay and sustained, less restrictive funds are needed to support CHW models. CHWs are on the frontline of communities saving lives. We can do better to invest in #prevention in the communities where people live, work, play, and worship. #CATALYST #publichealth #health #equity National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) The National Institutes of Health UC Irvine Joe C.
