We're making an important shift in how we communicate about residents. As our Chair, Hattie Llewelyn-Davies, recently stated in an interview with Inside Housing, “to label someone as ‘vulnerable’ is to diminish them, because it suggests they are somehow fragile, incapable or lesser-than.” That’s why we’ve taken the decision to stop using the term “vulnerable” throughout our organisation. We believe this choice will help motivate us to better understand that residents are individuals, with individual needs and individual lives. We’ll also be able better identify what work is required to meet residents’ needs, and how services can be adapted and improved. As Hattie said best, “we need to move beyond using the meaningless adjective, ‘vulnerable’, to summarise an individual’s circumstances, or to unthinkingly put people who may have very different experiences into one homogenous group.” You can read Inside Housing's article here: https://bit.ly/3MuFxkB #Empowerment #RespectfulCommunication #HousingAssociation #CommunityFirst

Around the world, housing is becoming increasingly unaffordable, and as a result, there's not enough social housing to meet growing demand. Peter Apps believes the solution starts with changing our mindset about public housing. Personally, I agree with him. Current approaches aren't working. Following the Great Depression, public housing provision accelerated and many regions successfully addressed their housing inequalities. Right now, we rely heavily on the market. By viewing social housing as a service and providing it as one, we could better serve our communities and meet their housing needs. #SocialHousing #HousingCrisis #HousingPolicy #AffordableHousing
