As history often repeats itself, the current East and Gulf Coast port strike strikingly mirrors the 1938 truckers' strike in both timing and potential economic impact. On October 1, 2024, a massive port shutdown commenced due to a walkout by 45,000 union longshoremen, coincidentally mimicking the past when truckers on the East Coast ceased operations amid a Category 3 hurricane. Reflecting on this, it's hard not to notice the eerie parallels. Both strikes happened during significant natural disasters requiring urgent relief efforts, underlining the critical role transportation workers play during crises. These events underline transportation as the backbone of our supply chain, emphasizing the severe repercussions labor disputes can have on the economy—estimated at a staggering $5 billion per day during this current strike. Timing is everything

The International Longshoremen’s Association is the largest union of maritime workers in North America, and they represent 45,000 members. Negotiations began in the last week of May and the unions current six-year contract is a week away from expiring. If a new Master Contract Agreement cannot be reached with the United States Maritime Alliance by midnight of September 30th, they plan on going on strike at all of its Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports starting October 1st. The union is looking for better wages and continued protections against automation and new technology in its terminals. The ports that would be affected are South Carolina, Texas, Maine, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, and Florida, with possible disruptions for other regions and industries. Disruption to the supply chain for vital supplies and rebuilding materials to the devastated area will compound the distress as we head into the colder months. The dockworkers strike, along with the ongoing Boeing strike will likely hinder recovery and rebuilding efforts to the heavily impacted areas that are largely supported by imports from East and Gulf Coast ports. On Monday, Montreal’s ports initiated a partial three-day strike, affecting operations at the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals. Yesterday, longshore workers in the U.S. followed suit, launching a long-expected strike that has now impacted all Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports.
