The World Filtration Congress (WFC14) will provide an opportunity to discuss the technical and scientific challenges and innovations in fluid-particle separations. The scientific committee is keen to highlight the involvement of all these processes in environmental and sustainable development issues. Particular attention will be paid to a fast-growing area: the valorization of natural resources, in line with the biorefinery concept, of biosourced molecules to replace petrochemical products. PFAS-Blaster project, funded by the Service Public Wallonie (SPW), saw an important milestone reached this week with the technical kick-off meeting at the IBA headquarters in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. This meeting has been a key moment to dive deeper into technical discussions and carefully organize the first phases of experimentation. This ambitious project aims to develop a treatment solution for materials contaminated by PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, by combining three innovative technologies: - High-energy electron beam irradiation - Bioremediation - Low-temperature thermal desorption 🤝 Partners provided detailed explanations of the technical functioning of their technologies and worked together to plan the execution of the initial experimental phases. The project brings together Idrabel Environmental Biotechnology, Haemers Technologies , Université de Liège, UNamur - Recherche, SPGE, SWDE, and is supported by GreenWin and MecaTech. Exciting News! Detection of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) has long been a challenging and expensive process. In our newly accepted publication by ACS Applied Nano Materials, titled "Nanoscale Fluorinated Carbon Dots for the Detection of Perfluorooctanoic Acid in Aqueous Systems: A Fluorescence Assay Enhanced by Fluorophilic Interactions", we present a more accessible and cost-effective detection method. This innovation has the potential to transform how industries, particularly those managing effluents and city water systems, address PFAS contamination. I acknowledge the hard work and heavy load of experiment done by my PhD student Somayeh Mohammadi to validate the method and test variety of short and long chain PFASs. We are immensely grateful for the funding that has supported our PFAS research, specifically through the AFRI-USDA-NIFA Grant #2024-67022-42827. With this support, our lab continues to explore new dimensions in environmental safety and sustainable water management. 🌟 Exciting news from Seia Bio! They have been awarded $275,000 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the National Science Foundation (NSF) subagency. This funding is part of the Small Business Innovation Research Program Phase I Action. #SBIR #STTR 🔬 The project aims to protect beneficial microbes from harmful stressors, enabling their widespread use. By switching from chemical to microbial products, we can reduce CO2 emissions and lower costs in various industries, from agriculture to healthcare. This innovative work will result in a generalized process for formulating any microbe for protection and understanding the engineering parameters required to scale-up microbial production. #Innovation #Sustainability 📅 The research will span 12 months, starting on November 1, 2024, and ending on October 31, 2025. Think of actinobacteria as nature’s ‘recyclers,’ secreting enzymes that break down plant residue and return vital nutrients to soil ♻️ “We drew inspiration from this bacterial family to expand our research into PET (polyethylene terephthalate) degradation, leveraging our expertise and a newly developed in-house platform for protein construction and testing,” shared Fong Tian Wong, a Research Scientist at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB). 💡Wong co-led a multidisciplinary research team alongside Yee Hwee Lim of the A*STAR Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy & Environment (ISCE2) in identifying, engineering and testing which actinobacterial enzymes performed best in decomposing PET. They found a selection of enzymes that could break down PET into its original monomers at mild temperatures and neutral pH—conditions that are less energy-intensive and more environmentally friendly than current recycling technologies.
