🎤Diana Vigah Adetsu🎤 (Saturday 5th October at 14.00) Mapping and Characterizing Peatlands Using State-of-the Art Sensors Peatlands represent large terrestrial carbon sinks or sources when kept pristine or drained, respectively. In recent years, the restoration of drained peatlands (e.g., by rewetting) is put forward as a viable option to mitigate anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. While a major objective of restoration programs is to accurately estimate peatland carbon stocks, traditional methods for mapping the required inputs for carbon accounting (e.g., peat thickness, bulk density, carbon content) are labour-intensive, time consuming and provide discrete measurements of suboptimal accuracy. Conversely, soil sensing techniques may be advantageous by allowing the rapid and large-scale acquisition of direct and proxy soil information. Therefore, this presentation will focus on the capabilities of on-the-go soil sensing methods for mapping key peat soil properties for carbon stock assessments across peatland types. WHAT IS THOUGHTS FOR FUTURE? It is is a weekend festival for students – by students – that focuses on sustainability, and is filled with interdisciplinary and engaging activities and workshops!🌱 WHEN & WHERE 📍5th-6th October, UCPH Frederiksberg Campus, Thorvaldsensvej 40 👉Sign up here for the event: https://lnkd.in/dkrdievB Thoughts for Future is financed by: Tuborgfondet Folkesparekassens Fond & Actory

PhD opportunity - Bio-engineering of biochar for enhanced remediation of contaminated environments with Tony Gutierrez at Heriot-Watt University! Deadline 15th January 2025 This project proposes an innovative systematic approach that will marry specific physicochemical properties of biochar with selected bacterial species for enhancing the bioremediation of soils contaminated with persistent priority pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The project is expected to result in a significant technological step forward in this field of soil pollution remediation because it will lead to producing new microbe-biochar composite materials (MBCs) that are tailor-made for the targeted and enhanced bioremediation of polluted soils. Specifically, the project represents the first synthesis approach taken to evaluate a range of waste feedstock source materials to match-make biochar with microbes for soil pollution remediation, with state-of-the-art techniques used to characterise the biochar materials to identify which are best suited for the colonisation of specific bioremediation microbes. The project will investigate the interaction of microbes with biochar and explore the mechanisms involved in attachment and biofilm formation. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eX59P3_E Select Edinburgh’ and ‘Postgraduate Research’ and Choose Bio-engineering and Bio-sciences PhD for study option (b) in ‘Research Project Information’, you will be provided with a free text box for details of your research project. Enter Title of the project for which you are applying and also enter the supervisor’s name, who is Professor Tony Gutierrez. #bioengineering #biochar #biomediaiton #PhD #soilpolution

💡 How can we join different types of materials together❓ 💡 Can we do it without fasteners and achieve structural joint❓ It's not just the aerospace industry but the entire world that is embracing greener, more sustainable solutions. By replacing traditional joining methods with material-driven alternatives, we can achieve weight reduction, time savings, and cost-effectiveness, thus contributing to a more sustainable future. At the next ITHEC - International Conference and Exhibition on Thermoplastic Composites conference, held on October 9-10, I will present a material-driven approach to join dissimilar materials. It involves a "hybrid adhesive" that strongly interacts with thermoset and thermoplastic composites. This unique polymer, acting as a coupling layer, can undergo further crystallization to enhance the durability of the joint by strengthening it and providing chemical resistance to certain solvents. For the first time, my presentation will demonstrate the potential use of a semi-crystalline PAEK-based polymer to join these two types of composite materials structurally. I hope to see you there! If you are there and interested in finding out more about my research, please DM me, and we can discuss this further over coffee.
