Emerging reports of a potential terror attack targeting a music hall in Moscow, Russia. At least three individuals armed with firearms and dressed in camouflage launched the attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue. Multiple explosions have been reported at the scene, with the building on fire, 40~ reported dead and 100+ injured. In response to the attack authorities have cancelled all large-scale sporting, cultural and other public events this weekend. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, amidst speculation linking the attack to myriad groups with various grievances. The attack follows a warning issued by the US embassy in Moscow two weeks ago, which assessed “extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts.” Prior to the US embassy warning, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced they had neutralised Islamic State militants who were planning a terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue. This followed the announcement of a counter-terrorist operation in the Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia (3 Mar), which resulted in the death of six militants. It appears that the US intelligence may have been accurate after all. They warned of an imminent terror attack in Moscow just a few weeks ago. The US authorities have confirmed that the intel passed to Russia informed them that Islamic State was plotting an attack on a concert. Islamic State have now claimed responsibility for this horrific terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow. It’s seems certain that the initial 40 victims will increase in number dramatically over the coming days as the full details become apparent. The similarities with the attack on the Bataclan in Paris are clear and of course it will bring back painful memories for the Russian people of the Nord Ost hostage siege in 2002. Terrorism obviously has immediate impacts for businesses in the service sector (publicly accessible locations) . They are now all cancelled in Moscow until the terrorists are detained.
