These weekly gatherings are for outdoor education and recreation professionals from any school, company, or organization, in any role. First-timers and old-timers all welcome and encouraged! If you are seeking support for: processing your summer or fall season with a racial justice lens, racial justice work you're doing in your own family or workplace, or your personal liberation practice, join us. We're here to do it in community. Logistics: - Wednesday evenings on Zoom, 6-8pm MST - September 4 - December 11, 2024 (with a few breaks in there) - Sliding scale pricing and we will not let cost be a barrier to anyone participating. In September 2020, we (Steph and Ella) began hosting a weekly space for our fellow backpacking and climbing instructors to talk about white supremacy, racism, and racial justice in outdoor education. The Racial Justice Weavings - "Weavings" - were named to place this gathering within its context: a long history and future of racial justice advocacy in outdoor spaces and education. The goal was to foster antiracist culture in our outdoor leadership school through collective learning and relationship-building. This relational, culture-shifting work is slow but it is powerful. Being flexible is the name of the game in business, and in life. Our VP Jeff Dougherty welcomed baby #2 into the world YESTERDAY! Congrats Jeff & Haley!   Jeff is on the board of the Penn York Lumbermen’s association, and with his beautiful daughter arriving he will not be able to attend Monday’s meeting. Family comes first, as it should. This allows me the opportunity to go to the meeting in Jeff’s place. I’ll have the chance to speak with our clients, and visit some other clients in the area over the following 48 hours before heading to Boston to visit our team there.   Attending industry functions has been a mainstay of AGL. It’s a great place to not only connect, BUT a great place to get a pulse on the market. Are we going to see the typical summer slow down? Probably. How “slow” will it really be? Is there some frontloading going on due to the impending election? Is there enough supply or demand in the marketplace? A lot of these questions will be answered in a week, and I will have the luxury of relaying that information to our internal team.   When you get to see your clients over a decade's time span, they become more than clients, but more like friends, and in some instances, family.   A little flexibility goes a long way, and getting to meet some friends in the process is always fun.

The vision was set, the energy was high, and yet what was planned to take weeks was dragging on for months. There wasn't time and space to get aligned, learn from each other, and create the next best version of the work. This was the challenge Devin Vodicka faced while serving as Superintendent of Vista Unified School District and looking to lead learner-centered change across 30 schools. A different approach was needed. Queue the concept of Guiding Coalitions, inspired by John Kotter’s Dual Operating Systems. These coalitions were about creating a backbone for change, connecting the dots between varied initiatives and ensuring alignment with overarching goals. From there, change accelerated and the district began seeing the transformation it always knew was possible. The best part of Guiding Coalitions is their replicability and adaptability to each unique community. Revolutionizing Reentry: The Elm City Reentry Pilot Today, 4-CT launched the third cohort of the Elm City Reentry Pilot, welcoming twenty more individuals into a program that redefines what reentry support can and should be. For the next 12 months, each participant will receive $500/month, providing the stability, autonomy, and dignity to reclaim their lives after incarceration. This isn’t just financial aid—it’s an act of radical trust. It’s a challenge to the broken systems that punish instead of restore. And it’s a declaration that we believe in the power of people to rebuild their own lives when given the resources to do so. As someone who once walked this path, I know the profound impact of this program. Today, as the Community Engagement and Advocacy Fellow, I am humbled to support its expansion and to stand alongside individuals who refuse to let their past define their future. I’m deeply grateful to Raquel Ferguson for her tireless dedication and to our twenty new participants, who are not just beneficiaries—they are the revolutionaries leading the way. The Elm City Reentry Pilot proves that change is possible when we invest directly in people and their potential. Together, we’re not just helping individuals; we’re dismantling inequities and rebuilding communities from the ground up. What’s your favorite thing about working at FACS?  One of the things I love most about working at FACS is the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on the environment. It's incredibly fulfilling to be part of a team that's dedicated to making a difference in the world. What is one thing we don't know about you (non-work-related)? Outside of work, I'm all about hockey, golf, hiking, and most importantly, spending quality time with my family. What is one thing that you geek out about?  I'm a bit of a history buff and love diving into the stories and events that have shaped our world. Whether it's ancient civilizations, wars, or cultural movements, I find it fascinating to explore the complexities of the past and how they've influenced our present. What is your favorite store to shop at in-person or virtually? When it comes to shopping, I'm a huge fan of browsing through local farmer's markets. Do you have any pets? Yes, I'm proud to say I have a rescue dog named Tusk, who brings endless joy to my life. He's a delightful mix of Shiba Inu and Husky, and our favorite activity is going to the brewery together and hunting lizards! What is your favorite book to read?  Two of my top picks are "The Worlds That Made Us" by Akhil Reed Amar, delving into the historical roots of American constitutional law, and any work by Dr. Seuss, whose imaginative stories always bring joy and inspiration. What is your favorite random fact?  The term "Windy City" was not originally coined because of Chicago's weather, but rather because of its politicians.
