A colleague of mine, Shani Eribo, has written a paper called "Breaking the exclusion cycle: What can grant-making foundations and non-profits do to achieve a more equitable funding landscape?" It's an excellent article on how organizations can take practical and authentic steps to break the exclusion cycle. I recommend this read. https://bit.ly/4d0zJLL #buildingmissiontogether

For many non-profits finding a sustainable, long-term funding model to support not only projects but also operations is close to miraculous (for those who don’t know this cartoon, it’s a classic that’s been used many times for many different messages). At least, however, there are a few different funding model options to consider and work on. Based on my recent series of posts, here is my final list - according to personal preference - with links to each of the relevant posts. They're ranked from most preferred to least preferred and I've tried to summrise the pros and cons of each in the comments box. NIKA WastePlan is largely owned by Nika Capital, a non-profit company focused on eradicating socio-economic inequality (including it’s after effects) by channeling funds towards education to those in need. Supplemented by genuine generosity, Nika acts as both a pioneer and a channel through which companies can form part of and contribute to the betterment of our local society. Functioning similarly as a trust, Nika is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) affording “black shareholding ownership” to companies that contribute towards it’s capital portfolio and scheme. Excited to take on this challenge!! 💥 Ready to rumble and make an impact! This year, our passion for innovation and technology is taking a dedicated step towards helping develop VR-based therapy for children. Did you know that nearly 14% of children in the Netherlands are associated with some form of therapy before their 18th birthday? That's almost half a million children! 🤯 That's why 20 of our Ciphians are training hard with the goal to raise awareness and donations for this cause by running in the Rotterdam Marathon. 📢 And this is where you come in! Via the link below, you can show your support by donating towards our goal of €10,000. Whatever the amount, every euro is a step closer to our goal. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eydPZeKR In support of Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Utens' pioneering research we want to help collect funds to develop VR-therapy for children with selective mutism. Selective mutism is a type of anxiety disorder where children do not speak in certain settings. For example, a child speaks at home, but doesn't speak at school. This affects all areas of their lives, which has a knock-on effect in regards to their development and learning. Through Virtual Reality (VR)-therapy, children can undergo exposure therapy and overcome these situations to eventually regain their ability to speak. What makes VR such a great tool is the complete customisability in such that you can virtually create any situation by which a child can practice and overcome their fears. A beautiful initiative in which we want to make a difference! 💞
Rain or sunshine, day or night, in Rotterdam, Delft, or Amsterdam, our dedicated Ciphix team is putting in the kilometers, gearing up for the upcoming Rotterdam Marathon. With just two weeks to go, the excitement is undeniable! 🏆 We're not just running for ourselves; we're running to support research on selective mutism. You can support our team and thereby the research by donating via the following link 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecFQfPiM More info on selective mutism: ✔️https://lnkd.in/eRiFkc55 ✔️https://lnkd.in/eHa3rNd2

Why would an NGO take half the amount of funding on offer? I recently did a poll in an online community of NGO fund raisers and leaders. The options were simple: 1) would you choose INR 1 million of unrestricted annual funding commitment for three years, or 2) Take INR 2 million of annual program funding from the same funder for three years with an indirect cost cap of 10%. Most of the NGO leaders chose unrestricted funding, and even those who chose the latter, said that they were doing so because of their current situation where they are striving to cover their program budgets. Many also said that if this wasnt their current reality, they would have gladly chosen option 1. Coming back to the original question I posed- the answer is quality of funding. These hundred odd NGO leaders with probably a 1000+ years of combined experience in the social sector were willing to choose half the amount of funding because they understand the value of, and benefits of the unrestrictive nature of funding. Such funding allows NGOs to experiment, innovate, to invest in bottlenecks which are holding them back, in capabilities which can create an exponential impact and in a nutshell allows them to serve their constituents better. So if you are a funder... it is time to reflect on the quality of funding you are providing. Are you truly adhering to your own quality standards when it comes to philanthropic giving or are you giving low quality grants which NGOs receive in absence of any other option? What exactly is your market positioning in this case?
