Sokolov from National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is now available in the Journal of Optics and Photonics Research. ''Acoustic modulation of individual nanowire quantum dots integrated into a hybrid thin-film lithium niobate photonic platform'' Our work combines quantum emitters, thin-film lithium niobate photonics, and strain tuning using surface acoustic waves (SAWs) within a single hybrid platform. Congratulations to PhD student Tanguy Schetelat and Postdoctoral researcher Thomas Descamps. Val Zwiller In this study, we demonstrate the modulation of emission wavelengths from InAsP/InP nanowire quantum dots (NWQDs) embedded within Si3N4-loaded waveguides on a thin-film lithium niobate platform. By utilizing focused interdigital transducers (FIDTs) operating at 400 MHz, we achieve an emission wavelength modulation. This scalable strain-tuning method represents a significant step towards producing indistinguishable single photons from remote emitters, crucial for on-chip quantum information processing. Our approach highlights the potential for large-scale, integrated photonic quantum technologies by enabling spectral overlap between quantum dots with initially different wavelengths, and paves the way for advancements in quantum communication and computing. Scientists from CNR Nanotec in Lecce and the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw used a new generation of semiconductor photonic gratings to optically tailor complexes of quantum droplets of light that became bound together into macroscopic coherent states. The research underpins a new method to simulate and explore interactions between artificial atoms in a highly reconfigurable manner, using optics. 🔬 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇 𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 ✨ Before 2011, Quantum Dots (QDs) were primarily described in the same way as atomic photon emitters—point sources with wavefunctions whose spatial extent could be disregarded. However, our founder and co-authors' exploration of QDs near plasmonic nanostructures shattered this conventional wisdom. They discovered a remarkable eightfold enhancement in plasmon excitation rate, contingent upon QD orientation, unveiling their mesoscopic character. Furthermore, they revealed that the geometry of plasmonic nanostructures can tailor the interaction, either enhancing or suppressing it. This discovery opened new avenues to leverage QDs' unique mesoscopic traits in developing nanophotonic devices, where understanding and enhancing the interaction between light and matter is crucial 💡 Since their groundbreaking discovery, these insights have fueled innovative applications in nanophotonics, playing a significant role in advancing Sparrow's development of best-in-class single-photon sources. Faster, higher, stronger! Physicists at our Quantum and Nanotechnologies Research Centre have set a new standard for calculation speed and stability with their implementation of ultrafast time-bin encoding, a technique that could one day serve the basis for a viable quantum computer. Using a platform built in our Ottawa labs, the ultrafast quantum photonics team showed that by reducing the gap between information-carrying photons, known as time bins, to a blistering 4.3 picoseconds—or 4.3 millionths of a millionth of a second—their setup could perform a notoriously complex simulation known as a quantum walk with greater speed and reliability than previous efforts in the field. “One of the insights we had is that at the picosecond level, essentially everything is frozen in time.
