Today , like every year, I took part in the open day for Lincoln medical school and it was really nice to see a lot of students attend and show their interest in applying for medicine. After speaking to prospective students today, I thought I would share some advice for anyone about to start medical school this september. 1) Don’t forget why you are doing medicine. At Lincoln medical school we have an oath that all students take and it is very easy to forget. If you remember your “why”, your approach to learning and approaching medical school will change, especially whilst studying. 2) You are not JUST a student doctor. Yes you go to medical school , attend lectures and attend placements BUT your experience as a student doctor shouldn’t just end there! Most student doctors, like myself have a lot of free time and energy. So use that to advance and widen your skills, go and join societies , network with people. You don’t even need to revolve your life around medicine, you don’t need to limit what you can do, if you want to be a student doctor and also become a fiction-writer for children’s books, then do that! 3) Enjoy learning. It’s so hard to enjoy learning as most of the time we just want to pass exams or we will tell ourselves we will try harder for next year. When you sit down and learn the “why” behind physiology, anatomy, microbiology etc… and what you read makes sense, then learning becomes so fun! It becomes even better when you get to apply the knowledge on a real patient and hopefully one day save a life with that knowledge. 4) Surround yourself with good people. There are good and bad people wherever you go, that is the reality of life. Your job is to notice who has a bad and a good influence on you and actively surround yourself with good people. Good people could be individuals who are passionate, have the right morals, kind , sincere and many other qualities. 5) Respect your peers, teachers and patients. It will take you a long way and respect can be both big and small. For example, holding the door open for your patients or referring to your lecturers by their title and surname rather than their first name (unless told otherwise).
Great Q&A session with our fantastic medical students.
