Unpopular Opinion Alert. Gareth Southgate should be the next Manchester United manager. Hear me out. Gareth Southgate played a pivotal role in the development of St. George’s Park, which has become a cornerstone for English football. Also, the culture shift under his leadership has been nothing short of incredible. Southgate transformed a fractured and underperforming men's squad into one that genuinely believes it can win. The results speak for themselves—World Cup semi-finals in 2018, a European Championship final in 2021, and consistent performance in major tournaments. Compare this to the years of underachievement before his tenure, and the difference is night and day. After watching the 3-0 Loss yesterday, Its clear Manchester United is in desperate need of a culture and mentality shift. The talent is there, but the structure, belief, and winning mentality aren’t. That’s where Southgate comes in. His ability to build aswell as create a positive, resilient culture and build teams that perform on the biggest stages makes him, in my opinion, the perfect candidate to lead United forward. After listening to his interviews on the High Performance Podcast and elsewhere, I’m convinced that Southgate is the man to finally bring the long-awaited success back to Manchester United. This video is about six minutes long. You might not think you'll watch the entire thing, but you probably will. Posting it here will lead to a large collective loss of productivity. I'm not sorry. (There are quite a few versions of this video floating around. This was the original. I saw one the other day that was 15 minutes long. I watched every second of it.) It seems like every book on culture or leadership or mentoring eventually gets around to Gregg Popovich. He's the coach of the San Antonio Spurs. He has been their coach for almost 30 years straight, which is the longest anyone has coached any professional team (playing anything) in the U.S. So many leadership books talk about Pop because he's incredibly good at creating culture and getting people to give their best. With the Spurs, he's build a really amazing team that plays basketball differently. The Spurs are wildly collaborative in a sport where it's very easy to over-emphasize one's self. (Honestly, though, other teams may have emulated the Spurs by now. Maybe they're not unique anymore, but rather just set a trend for decades? I'm not a basketball expert.) Pop loves his players and his coaches. He thanks them every year for allowing him to coach them. He spends as much time planning what they do away from the court as what they do on it. With few exceptions, his players are incredibly loyal to him and to the team. "The Culture Code" talks about Pop a lot. So do dozens of other business books. This video gives a nice look into why. This video makes me want to be part of a team. (In fact, I think I will...)

Bandwagon boarded… Watching England falling at the final hurdle (again), I found myself thinking a lot about Gareth Southgate, based on his performance as a manager and leader…surprisingly there’s lots of lessons to learn that transfer well into business life. The good bits… Loyalty He clearly shows loyalty to the playing staff and promotes a togetherness in the squad. Integrity He always speaks very well, with confidence and certainty. Humility He never made it ‘about him’ and puts the players first, sacrificing himself and opening himself up to criticism. The bad bits… Courage He got very lucky in the semi against The Netherlands, and bought himself an opportunity to make history, but he lacked the courage to make the big calls. Strategy He didn’t have a Plan B. The fact he picked pretty much the same 11 for every game tells me he didn’t have a contingency plan. Energy He gets animated on the sideline but he isn’t dynamic and there is no ‘wow factor’. The performances were negative and lacked energy. In summary Gareth, being a ‘nice guy’ wasn’t enough. Having good core values wasn’t enough and showing loyalty to the wrong people was never going to get us over the line. Avoiding difficult decisions will catch up with you, even if you dodge a few bullets along the way. In business, all of the above is true. All of the good things that Gareth showed, loyalty, integrity and humility, are fantastic qualities and pillars upon which businesspeople should build themselves. But without strategy, courage and energy, you’ll never win at the highest level. Gareth made a comment about ‘wanting to be liked’ earlier in the competition and for me, the best leaders in sport and in business know that you have to be able to be ruthless, and you don’t care what people think. It’s now time for the FA to be ruthless and to appoint someone with that winning mentality, so that they don’t let this generation of players, and the long suffering fans down. #southgate #england #business #leadership
