Spring is just around the corner and with it, the promise of warmer weather! As we embrace this seasonal transition, it’s important to prioritize the implementation of proper stormwater management practices. Springtime presents unique challenges in the form of melting snow and increased rainfall, which can result in excessive runoff and potential flooding. To mitigate these risks, protect water quality, and ensure community resilience during the winter-to-spring shift, it's essential to adopt the strategies and techniques discussed in the article below. It explores key strategies such as the proper maintenance of drainage systems, inspection of catch basins and stormwater ponds, and the implementation of erosion control measures to prevent debris accumulation, manage water flow, and preserve water quality. With storms and heavy rain in the forecast, you can do your part to help keep water out of basements with these tips: • Avoid running a dishwasher or washing machine during storms. • Disconnect downspout connections from the sewer system. • Make sure to direct downspout flow to areas with permeable surfaces that can properly absorb the stormwater or use rain barrels to collect the water directly from the downspouts. • Clear the area around downspouts to allow water to flow freely away from your foundation. • Do not dump fats/oils/greases in private drains or public catch basins. • For better resistance to flooding in the future, it can be helpful to install rain gardens, green landscaping, or stormwater trees in your yard to help retain rainwater. Thank you to our dedicated utility crews who get the job done!! Stormwater drainage piping helps to collect rainwater and runoff from the road surface, preventing water from pooling or flooding the road. These pipes are usually connected to a larger network of underground drainage systems that channel the water away from the road and into appropriate drainage outlets such as rivers, lakes, or reservoirs. Proper drainage infrastructure is crucial for maintaining road safety and preventing damage to the road surface due to water accumulation. Stormwater drainage systems alongside roads serve several important purposes, such as: • Preventing flooding by efficiently collecting rainwater and runoff from the road surface. Without proper drainage, water can accumulate on roads, causing hazards for drivers and pedestrians. • Protecting Infrastructure: By directing stormwater away from roads and surrounding infrastructure, drainage systems help prevent erosion, waterlogging, and damage to roads, bridges, and buildings. • Enhancing Safety: Eliminating standing water on roads reduces the risk of hydroplaning and skidding, thus improving road safety for motorists and cyclists, especially during rainy conditions. • Preserving Water Quality: Stormwater runoff can carry pollutants such as oil, debris, and sediment from the road surface. Drainage systems typically include filtration and treatment mechanisms to remove contaminants before the water is discharged into natural water bodies, thus helping to preserve water quality and aquatic ecosystems. • Preventing Soil Erosion: By efficiently channeling stormwater away from roads and adjacent land, drainage systems help prevent soil erosion, which can degrade landscapes, harm vegetation, and contribute to sedimentation in waterways. In urban areas with extensive impervious surfaces like roads and parking lots, stormwater drainage systems play a crucial role in managing runoff and preventing urban flooding, which can disrupt daily life and cause property damage. https://lnkd.in/gQJeVwtS #utilities #civilconstruction #stormwatermanagement
