I fed this riddle to ChatGPT, Gemini& Claude each with same prompts and hints shared piece by piece, all of them failed to come up with the correct combo. It is very interesting what answer they each come up with and their logic of deduction. ChatGPT was able to come up with 3 answers, 2 of which violates the hints and one was correct. Gemini very quickly diverged into asking me about the the lock itself (whether a digital dialer or a rotational dialer of the combo lock) while eliminating a digit pre-maturely, and Claude started with all possible digits from 1-9 to go through process elimination ending up with digits not even mentioned in the clue. This is an interesting exercise for me and to see the logic built up of assistant AIs as well as their thinking pattern. Almost like different personalities. Try it for yourself :)

This appears to be another example of the kind of problem discussed by Davis: Ernest Davis, Mathematics, Word Problems, Common Sense, and Artificial Intelligence, Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society (New Series), vol. 61, No.2, April 2024, pp. 287-303. For anyone interested in knowing more about the ability of AI to solve problems, I recommend this as a starting point.
