Here's a nice write up about the recent project at Ackerson Meadow. Several years in planning and a couple years of construction have transformed 400 acres of critical environment to a healthy and self sustaining state.

Strategic Planning and Safe Execution in Arboriculture: 🌳 At About Trees, safety, precision, and strategic planning are at the heart of every project. In this image, Morgan and Charlie are setting up a lowering device on the main stem of a mature Ash tree—a vital part of our arboriculture work that enables us to dismantle large trees safely and efficiently. The lowering device plays a critical role in ensuring safe tree dismantling operations by adding friction to the lowering line. This friction allows ground staff to safely control and lower sections of the tree that are larger than they could normally handle. Importantly, every component of the lowering system—from the ropes to the devices—must be rated strong enough to support the weight and forces involved, ensuring both the safety of the crew and the integrity of the operation. Tree work, especially when dealing with large, mature specimens, requires careful coordination between the arborist in the tree and the ground staff. The success of this project depends not only on the technical skills of our team but also on the detailed planning that takes place beforehand. We always assess the individual needs of the tree, the site conditions, and the tools required to carry out the job safely and efficiently. This particular Ash tree has an exciting story behind it, one that we’ll be sharing when the time is right. The future of this tree involves a unique plan! At About Trees, we are committed to upholding the highest standards in arboriculture, ensuring that safety, sustainability, and client satisfaction are always at the forefront of what we do. Stay tuned for more updates on this project, and in the meantime, if you have any tree care needs, don’t hesitate to reach out to our professional team. #Arboriculture #TreeCare #SafetyManagement #OperationalExcellence #LoweringDevice #Sustainability #Teamwork #RiskMitigation #ProfessionalTreeWork #InnovationInTreeCare

Was there a notice Duquesne Light Company (DLC) hanging on your doorknob? Have you seen orange markings (perhaps a dot) on Borough Trees in front of your residence or along your daily walks? You asked us and we investigated and have information. In 2025, DLC will be conducting utility vegetation management in Oakmont. Fortunately, the marked trees are in the public right-of-way and under the watchful eye of the Borough’s Shade Tree Commission (STC). The DLC Notices seem to indicate that these trees are on private property, which you probably know are not. This can be confusing and misconstrued. Another challenge, the doorhangers are worded that the trees can ultimately be removed; which is not accurate. Any tree, public or privately owned, can be retained with proper pruning. That is an option that is not widely known or shared. So, if you get a doorhanger or are approached by a DLC representative, know that tree removal is not required. We do know a representative of DLC is canvassing the Borough working through their scope of work for 2025. We have advised DLC that the Borough owns what we all affectionately call “Borough Trees” and representatives of the STC and Borough administration will be meeting over the months to review the proposed work.

Great, in-depth reporting from my colleague at Savannah Morning News & savannahnow.com, John Deem. He captures, so well, the nuances of the long-term impacts of building a plant like the Hyundai Metaplant in Ellabell, GA. Impacts we might not think about as we drive by a large construction cite where heavy machinery clears trees and land for large storage or manufacturing facilities or even housing developments. His latest story addresses the impact on wildlife. https://lnkd.in/eeP9PiHx
More than 100 tortoises were removed from burrows at Hyundai site ahead of construction

MNL, along with project partners City of Brainerd and WSB Engineering, began work on a restoration project for the City of Brainerd in fall of 2023. This project was near the local high school and adjacent to the Mississippi River. The goals of the project were to stabilize the riverbank to halt erosion and provide critical aquatic habitat. Rivers and streams are under threat all across the United States and restoring them requires a lot of thoughtful bioengineering. MNL selected the right materials to ensure a successful restoration. Locally sourced toewood was used instead of riprap to stabilize the banks and create natural habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures. Boulder clusters were carefully placed in key locations to simulate a natural streambank formation and restore the natural flow of the channel, further reducing erosion. Finally, after the riverbank had been reformed, native seeds and live plants were installed to further enhance the site's ability to support wildlife and create healthy root systems that also serve to control erosion. Projects such as these highlight just how MNL shows integrity and craftsmanship in everything we do. We don't take shortcuts or use materials that are cheaper just to save on cost. We don't source seeds or plants from unknown or exotic sources because we understand the importance of native plants and their ability to produce food and habitat for wildlife as well as grow deep roots that enhance and stabilize soil. That's why cities like Brainerd, MN choose MNL when they take on a project like this riverbank restoration. We've been restoring riverbanks, just like this Mississippi River project, for over 25 years and we're not slowing down. We are on a mission to Heal the Earth! #HealtheEarth #EcologicalRestoration #NativePlants #Habitat #GreenSolutions #NatureBasedSolutions #Biodiversity https://lnkd.in/g6v7A8FV

Growing up in nature and then watching its decimination over the last 30yrs in my working life is heartbreaking. I think we’re suffering as a species quite simply because of our detachment from the natural environment. We know we feel better when we’re in it & when we look after it, yet here we are with 3% left across the board from just 100yrs ago. We’ve been led to eat it, spray it, shoot it, skin it, cull it but not live with it and protect it with our lives. I’m not saying there aren’t incredible people doing extraordinary things to help nature thrive but it’s an effort that needs addressing on a larger scale and it can all start in the garden. I’ve invested 30+yrs in construction with the notion of building homes not houses, I’ve researched how creating the right environment during the building process creates the best place for a family to thrive once the build is completed. Sowing and maintaining Wild flower meadows, hedgerows and planting organic vegetables has proven in our research that everyone benifits, from the nature, the workforce, the quality of the build and family life. At Axford & Heaton we’ve come up with a solution to put back 3% of wildflower meadow land in 3yrs through construction sites….open the link to find out how we can make the United Kingdom and beyond healthy again. It’s been a fairly busy period over the last 6 or so weeks. However back in October 2023 we tendered for a project at Peter Hopper Lake at Redleap Reserve in Mill Park. In early 2024 we were successful in being awarded the Growling Grass Frog Fence, but this time with a twist. Not only to protect Frogs, but Turtles as well. All 500 meters worth. With different obstacles and restrictions in our way due to the extreamly sensitive area of construction we were able to come up with a method or should I say solution that would tick all boxes. If you would like to know more about the specifics of the installation please get in touch, I’d love the opportunity to assist anyone in a similar situation. More about the lake. Peter Hopper Lake at Redleap Reserve, Mill Park is one of the City of Whittlesea's largest water bodies. Built in the mid-1970's, the lake has recently experienced recurrent algae blooms causing the water quality in the lake to decline. While various treatments have had some success in restoring water quality, the effects have not been long-lasting and further work is required to improve the long-term health of the lake. This is where Enviropacific and Advanced Environmental Services came together and worked out the best solution to protect the habitiat for Frogs and Turtles as well as shielding the public from current and future works happening in and around the lake. So what’s actually happening? Following extensive investigations and expert recommendations, the lake will firstly require desilting, which means that the water in the lake will be drained and the silt (mud) and sediment (debris) that has collected in the bottom of the lake over many years will be removed. In addition, a range of new infrastructure will be built to help filter water flowing into the lake and ensure continuous water movement to avoid the issues currently seen as a result of stagnant water. This includes a new raingarden, and a sediment pond at the lake inlet to help separate fine particles from the main body of water. Given the scale of the works it is expected that the overall construction period, including landscaping works, will take approximately 12 months to complete. The Advanced Group is very proud to take part in this project and can not wait for the end result in what is a very important precinct in Melbournes Northern Suburbs. #silt #sediment #frogfence #erosion #melbourne #May #water #environmentalprotection #environment #millpark

Could your Allegheny County neighborhood benefit from more trees? 🌳 🌳 🌳 Contact us through May 1 to begin the application to have trees planted this fall through TreeVitalize Pittsburgh: https://bit.ly/2QcXupj. We put a lot of thought into what species of trees we choose for each location, and we'll help you think through the process. Just a few of the things we consider include: ❓ How much room does the tree have to grow? ❔ Are there overhead lines? ❓ Where are the underground lines, such as gas lines? ❔ Will the trees will be planted on a high-traffic street that gets a lot of salt? ❓ What type of site prep is needed? ❕ and much more.
