If you missed this morning's steelTalk about our latest Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) Study, make sure you're following us here on LinkedIn. We'll post the replay link as soon as it's available. Dr. Max Biegler of Fraunhofer IPK Project Office for Advanced Manufacturing at ITA and Keke Yang of Paderborn University, presented highlights of the Phase 2 Report. This study determined that advancements in metallurgy, production and welding techniques have significantly reduced AHSS’s sensitivity to LME. Additionally, it found that manufacturers can use optimized welding processes to further reduce LME risk in large-scale production. Powder metallurgy press forming involves compressing metal powders into a “green” part using a die and punches. This process creates a compacted shape that is fragile and requires subsequent sintering to achieve desired mechanical properties through atomic diffusion. The method was notably developed Peter G. Sobolevsky, a Russian scientist who developed methods for creating jewelry from platinum powder in 1827 and subsequently made popular in the 1950s for the aerospace industry, facilitating the production of high-strength components for jet engines and other applications. The process has evolved, becoming essential in automotive and manufacturing sectors due to its efficiency and ability to produce complex shapes with minimal waste.
