Greetings from the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) SIG 15 Conference! EARLI SIG 15 is an international scientific research interest group that brings together early career and established researchers and other stakeholders from across the globe interested in the education and inclusion of individuals with special educational needs (SEN) of all ages. Through scientific discussions, collaboration, and exchanging research outcomes, SIG15 aims to further the understanding of those with SEN and to improve learning, instruction in a broad range of settings, and inclusion for individuals with SEN so that they may realize their full potential in society. From 2-4 September the EARLI SIG15 met in Valencia, Spain, with the appealing theme of ‘Neurodiversity in Education: Research and Practice’. This conference enabled researchers and practitioners to reflect robustly and collaboratively on the neurodiversity perspective adopted in education by discussing questions such as: Is the neurodiversity perspective a useful epistemological framework?; What is the purpose of depathologizing neurodivergence?; Is this new perspective applicable to all individuals within the neurodiverse spectrum in education? "Neurodivergence" is a non-medical term that describes individuals whose brain develops or works differently from what is considered “neurotypical”. This term emphasizes the fact that the human brain has natural variations in the way it processes information. This approach recognizes conditions such as autism, dyslexia, ADHD, or deafness as facets of human neurodiversity. Hence, through the neurodivergent lens, the educational approach towards students with these conditions, both in research and practice, emphasizes their strengths rather than their limitations. I'm thankful for this great opportunity to engage in these discussions and others, network with researchers and practitioners from around the globe, and present the first study of my PhD work, which explores the role of self-determination (competence, autonomy, relatedness) in enhancing neurodivergent higher education students’ study engagement! #European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) #neurodiversity #inclusivehighereducation

Conference Seminar - Professor Diane Montgomery, ‘Supporting pupils with Dual and Multiple Exceptionality with specific reference to those with dyslexia.’ Dual and multiple exceptionalities will be defined, and the specific learning difficulties outlined. Then dyslexia will be focused upon in its three distinct phases, the logographic, the alphabetic and the orthographic. The early causes of dyslexia will be shown and how the different phases can be diagnosed by examining their educational ‘faces’. These ‘faces’ and their three different intervention programmes must give two years uplift in reading in one year with just 2 tutorials per week. This will be illustrated with case material and experimental data. It will show what pre-school ‘self-teachers’ do that can also help dyslexic learners read. Gender difference in diagnosis and intervention that overlook the needs of many dyslexic girls will also be addressed. In conclusion, a 7-point plan will be defined that will well help overcome the problems arising from dyslexia and also address the long tail of underachievement caused by disadvantage. ℹ The conference will feature 8 seminars from leading experts and delegates can access all seminars THREE WEEKS before the day, with our speakers participating in a live Q & A follow-up panel on the conference day. All recordings will be available for three weeks after the live event. ⌛ The conference provides 3 hours SASC authorised cpd, along with 8.5 hours general cpd 📌 Patoss Virtual Annual Conference 2024: How the Past Informs the Future: SASC Authorised 📆 Saturday 20th April 2024, 8:00-am-5:00pm 🌐 Find out more: https://shorturl.at/jxzA6 #patossconference #patossconference2024 #dyslexiaawareness #patossdyslexia #spld #dyslexiaconference #teachers #senco #dyscalculiaawareness

We are thrilled to announce that the Erasmus+ project has officially moved into the active phase of the Delphi study, and our team has begun recruiting experts. The Delphi study will focus on identifying key principles for designing a fully online curriculum, with a special emphasis on e-pedagogy, assessment, student engagement, and accessibility. This is part of the larger Erasmus+ initiative, which aims to develop a fully online Master’s program in Mental Health and Wellbeing (e-MeBe). As part of the work package led by Lorraine Christiana Boran and supported by research assistant Bróna Laverty, at the School of Psychology, DCU, we are contributing to a deeper understanding of the curriculum development principles necessary to create effective online programs. The integrative review and Delphi project will be key in shaping this innovative master’s program. We look forward to the valuable insights this study will bring to the future of online education in mental health and wellbeing! #ErasmusPlus #eMeBe #DelphiStudy #OnlineLearning #HigherEducation

At least 1 in 5 people are neurodivergent. Neurodivergent folx are in every workplace and CE training but are disadvantaged by systems, processes, norms and institutions that were constructed to exclude their way of being. There are a growing number of provisions and resources in K-12 education reaching into higher ed for accommodating neurodivergent learners, but accommodation provides the minimum necessary. It’s not the same as inclusion. It's not the same as belonging. There is a conversation in workforce development right now about the precise skills, divergent thinking and innovative capabilities that reside in so many neurodivergent adults who are under or unemployed because of current systems and norms. There’s a discussion about what it might take to provide workspaces that eliminate barriers and open way to vast untapped potential. And we know for careers to grow, CE must play a role. Presently, there are no guidelines or standards for neuroinclusive PD or continuing education. International Accreditors for Continuing Education & Training (IACET) would like to change that. Following the success of the AI Symposium, IACET has recruited a group that I am thrilled to Chair assembling research on Neuroinclusion that will be presented to the CE/T community and we will gather for a Neuroinclusion Symposium in May 7, 2025 in Memphis. You're going to want to put that date on your calendar! Thank you Randy, Bradley and the IACET team for your leadership in this vital conversation. #inclusiveCE #neuroinclusion #neurodiversity #CE #training #professionaldevelopment

Looking forward to presenting brand-new data and research at this year's Psychonomic Society Annual Meeting in New York City on Friday, 22 Nov 2024, Session Poster Session II (12:00 PM-1:30 PM). Engagement with Effective Learning Strategies in Students with Test Anxiety (Carolina E. Kuepper-Tetzel, Grace Callaghan, & Vendula Opluštilová) Abstract: Test anxiety is common among students with an estimated prevalence of 20-40% and is associated with impaired learning and academic achievement. While test anxiety is a multi-faceted construct, theoretical explanations (e.g., the skills deficit model) have emphasized the contributing role of poor study skills to the development and maintenance of test anxiety. Using a mixed-methods approach, we investigated the relationship between students’ engagement with effective learning strategies (specifically spaced and retrieval practice) and test anxiety. In Study 1, we surveyed N=166 students and revealed that neither engagement with spaced practice nor retrieval practice significantly predicted levels of test anxiety in students. In Study 2, we asked N=136 participants in open-ended questions about their views on implementing spaced and retrieval practice in relation to test anxiety. Through thematic analysis, we identified implementation success, time management, and previous experiences as main themes for the uptake of effective learning strategies. Our findings have implications for developing ways to promote effective study strategies among students with test anxiety. #testanxiety #learning #education
