Wartsilas my favorite engine supplier, but in this case I think the carts ahead of the horse. Prior to implementation, the following risks need to be addressed . What's been done to solve: 1. Ammonia " slip" and associated environmental impact. 2. operational impact to officers and crew, including long term exposure. 3.Fuel ]ank cleaning for inspection and survey. 4.Ammonia/water separation in bilges 5. Corrosion effects on equipment 6. Spills during normal bunkering. 7. transfer equipment - hose cleaning.,leaking flanges, hose damage and rupture, 8.defining allowed overboard discharge liimit? (considering the toxicity to all marine life.) 9 Efficiency losses in production of the fuel.. 10. How do you escape an ammonia cloud on an OSV. ??? ) 11.Response to a large fuel spill caused by collision, loss of containment, corrosion, grounding, sinking? ] These are well known issues, yet makers class, and regulators still turn a blind eye. I would especially Ike to see how the USCG, Class ,IMO/ SOLAS intend to address these toxic "green" fuel issues.
