All’università sentivo spesso dire che “tutta la storia economica del ‘900 si può ripercorrere attraverso una sola industria: quella dell’automobile”. E francamente, in quei momenti, faticavo a convincermi fosse vero. Come si fa a ridurre tutte le vicende economiche di un secolo come il ‘900 ad una sola industria (pur con tutto l’indotto che alimentava)? Ma poco alla volta, ritornando sulla questione (per caso o per intenzione), mi sono convinto che chiunque sia arrivato per primo a quella conclusione non potesse avere più ragione di così. E forse, dico forse, la vicenda che meglio sintetizza il tutto è il periodo passato alla storia come “The Malaise Era” (1973-1992): l’epoca che – in estrema sintesi – vide il declino dell’automobile Made in US. Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti: politica industriale e fiscale, regulation, marketing, inflazione, economia dell’internazionalizzazione, finanza, competizione, geopolitica, tecnologia, economia monetaria, comportamentale, teoria dei giochi e commodity markets (solo per citarne alcuni). Tutto a voler dire che la società è un sistema complesso, fatte di molte variabili in equilibrio. E quando questo equilibrio cambia, o si trova il modo di cambiare – ai ritmi richiesti – oppure ci si estingue. E l’accostamento tra un dinosauro e una Chevrolet Caprice V8 (7,5 litri) di inizi anni ’70 non è poi così ardito… Comunque sia, è tutto – magistralmente – raccontato da Ed, “die-hard car-guy” in “The Malaise Era: The Downfall of the American Automotive Industry” (da concetti e ricerche di Murilee Martin). https://lnkd.in/dPVcTFZb
