On this day, May 4th, in the afternoon 79 years ago a floating dock stranded at the coast of Langeland close to a location called Påø. It was in 1945 in the final days of the 2nd World War and our allies were fiercely battling the German forces. The floating dock held about 1.400 prisoners of war. They were placed on the dock as a mode of transport and shipped from Sassnitz to Flensborg. The tugboat that had towed the floating dock got gunned down and sunk by allied bombers and as a result it drifted for 4 days – without food or water. The 800 Russians and 600 French prisoners along with a few Belgians and the German guards were assisted to shore by small rowing boats and by local fishermen. Once safely on shore they were accommodated cared for in various ways until they could return to their countries. It was a major effort by the local municipality of Rudkøbing and the island of Langeland at large but it worked out. What is the morale of this? When we come together, we can overcome the most extreme situations and hardships – but when we go to war with each other then we only bring hardship upon all of us. The situation in Ukraine is threatening the security of all of Europe and probably the entire world. Large allocations of our national budgets now go to defence, rather than research and education. At the time when we need to come together our global leaders are failing us – and egoistic autocrats hold our destiny in their hands. To this day, we still place candles in our windows on May 4th. A longstanding tradition to commemorate our liberation and the end of the 2nd World War. We do not need more wars to commemorate!

Lunchtime Flashback: Daily World War News from the Past 🌍 World War II History: On October 14, several significant events occurred during the war: 1939 – The German submarine U-47 sinks the British battleship HMS Royal Oak at anchor in Scapa Flow, Scotland. The attack resulted in the deaths of 833 crew members and was a major blow to the British Royal Navy early in the war. 1940 – During the London Blitz, a bomb hits Balham Underground Station, causing part of the street above to collapse into the tunnel. Sixty-six people sheltering in the station were killed in this tragic disaster. 1943 – Prisoners at the Sobibor extermination camp successfully assassinated several on-duty SS officers in a secret uprising, leading to a mass breakout. While many prisoners were recaptured, the Sobibor uprising stands as one of the most notable acts of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust. 1943 – In the Second Raid on Schweinfurt, the U.S. Eighth Air Force suffered significant losses, with 60 of 291 B-17 Flying Fortresses shot down by German forces. The raid targeted ball-bearing factories but came at a high cost, marking one of the most devastating losses for the U.S. air campaign over Europe. 1943 – The Second Philippine Republic, a puppet state of Japan, was inaugurated with José P. Laurel as president. This government was established under Japanese occupation, though it lacked legitimacy in the eyes of many Filipinos who continued to resist the occupation. ⚔️🌐 #WWIIHistory #HMSRoyalOak #SobiborUprising #SchweinfurtRaid #LondonBlitz #SecondPhilippineRepublic #GlobalConflict #JewishResistance HaJunk - Business Development

Whilst this is a beautiful sentiment, we should be focussing on what Ukraine actually needs. UA needs more modern jets (with modern radars) to be able to push AWACS back, degrading the range advantage they currently hold. Until this happens, UA will be forced to remain on a purely defensive posture in the skies. Russia has not captured any major territories for some time now, but it won't be long before they start to redress the borders (Belgorod and Kursk are now active combat zones, don't forget). In order for Ukraine to win and successfully push Russia back to her international border, they need control of the skies.
Ukraine - last week for me was a sad event seeing the funeral cortege of a soldier from Kyiv whilst standing next to the flag memorial of the war in the central maidan. I ask you please to share my video, especially to any politicians you know. We have to start taking this war seriously, not just for Ukraine but for our own and our childrens futures as well. We must win.

New Book: What happened to dead bodies after big battles throughout history? Preamble While the bodies of knights and nobles were repatriated with pomp and ceremony, the masses most often disappeared into unmarked mass graves for much of the European medieval period. At most they would be identified as a member of a certain collective or community. Who recovers bodies in war? Mortuary Affairs is responsible for retrieval, identification, transportation, and burial of American soldiers. Retrieval can be further subdivided into: Combat Recovery – Recovery while combat is still ongoing. Post-Combat Recovery – Recovery of the dead immediately after combat has ceased.

In this newly published study of Norwegian officers, Sine Vorland Holen shows how soldiers in the chaos of conflict must swiftly categorize violence in order to craft justifiable responses. Soldiers classify violence as either war, crime, or cultural practice and invoke distinct logics to navigate these. These insights enrich our understanding of military decision-making.
