On #NationalHousingDay, TCHC’s CEO Sean Baird shares his thoughts in a recent ONPHA video about the significance of partnering with community housing agencies to expand available services.

New funding agency to 'supercharge' community housing providers. Dunedin City Council in partnership with community housing providers have the opportunity to grow our social housing. Community housing providers attract better funding from Central Government and also provide pastoral support for their tenants making it a more sustainable model. Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are already in this space and it is assisting their most vulnerable people.

The Local Enhancement Programme 2025 is now accepting applications from Community Groups (including Men’s Sheds and Women’s Sheds). On the 7th of November 2024, Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys and Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities Joe O’Brien announced €7 million in funding under the “Department of Rural and Community Development Local Enhancement Programme 2025”. This funding will consist of €6 million in capital supports essential for the many small community groups and organisations, particularly those who serve disadvantaged communities in rural and urban areas. A further €1 million in current funding is available for Community Groups, including Men’s Sheds and Women’s Sheds, to assist with their energy and running costs, to help them continue their important work within the community. Fingal County Council has been allocated €268,827 (€230,423 for Capital, €38,404 for Current). Housing Help, and its Executive Director, Pilar Moya-Mancera, are disappointed with the Town of Southampton's decision to vote down the Liberty Gardens development and their lack of intent to address the shortage of affordable housing for the veterans and families who desperately need it. Southampton continues to embrace the NIMBY mentality, even after inviting a housing organization to address the housing crisis they agree exists. In contrast, neighboring East Hampton is moving in a positive direction by creating a Community Housing Fund and using it to establish a down payment assistance program and a grant initiative for community housing projects. We own and manage a robust portfolio of 903 housing units across 34 properties throughout Calgary, serving over 1,300 residents. With over 100 new affordable housing units currently under construction, we’re expanding our reach even further. Our unique model for affordable housing sets us apart. HomeSpace partners with 23 social service agencies to provide wrap-around support in each of our buildings, ensuring our residents are safely housed and connected to the resources they need to thrive. On average, rent with HomeSpace is 46% below market rate. For the residents we support, accessing housing at 43-51% below market rate can be the difference between having a home and facing homelessness. The affordable housing crisis is in the news almost daily, impacting Calgarians from all walks of life and in many situations. Over the past two months, I've been working with the team at Alpha House Calgary on a new campaign, "Give Hope Through Housing". The goals are two-fold: ➡ Invite local landlords and property managers to consider partnering with Alpha House's community housing program. There are many supports offered, and doing so literally changes lives. ➡ Inspire Calgarians to be part of the solution by giving to the campaign. Additional funds are needed to help subsidize the rising costs of rents and basic living needs. The campaign aims to secure 20 - 30 units so that Alpha House can house 150 clients in 2024. The fundraising goal is $100,000.
