🍽️ The #RightToFood, coined as the "most violated human right" by #CISPM (Civil Society and Indigenous People's Mechanism for relations with the UN CFS), is particularly critical within the agricultural sector, where a significant portion of the world's hungry population consists of farmers and agricultural laborers. Companies involved in global supply chains for agricultural goods play a pivotal role in realizing #ZeroHunger by 2030. They serve as key contributors to food security and the transformation of food systems. The Food Security Standard directly addresses this imperative, assisting companies in ensuring food security at the production level. This encompasses initiatives such as providing food availability at workplaces or implementing nutrition training programs for employees. 🔍 Delve deeper into the significance of the right to food as a fundamental human right and its integration into global supply chains by exploring the #Welternährung - Welthungerhilfe (WHH) article: https://lnkd.in/dSFFfuTM Christine Wieck, Dr. Sarah Iweala, Bettina Rudloff, Achim Spiller, Prof. Dr., Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft, Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. As the (far) right is hijacking the narrative and presenting human rights as a "burden" to business, it's important to take a step back. Let's be very clear: The CSDDD is a landmark law and it's good that we have it ‼️ Until now, corporate due diligence was a voluntary and patchwork framework. But due diligence legislation is finally creating a level playing field, ensuring that all actors take the same actions and know their competitors are doing the same. It's two birds with one stone: 🐦 Collective action for people and planet 🐦 Competitors don't fear loosing profits because they invest in their workers and suppliers Now let's get to work on implementing it! See below the link to our paper on accompanying measures to the CSDDD 👇🏽
On this #HumanRightsDay, we celebrate the recent adoption of the first EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence, a landmark victory for human rights and the environment. ⚖️ 🌍 The #CSDDD is a groundbreaking piece of legislation, with the potential to address adverse human rights and environmental impacts of companies, putting human rights and labour rights on the agenda of corporations and ensuring a healthier environment for present and future generations. The #CSDDD is also a game-changer for business, harmonising the legal framework in the EU, creating certainty and a level playing field. In addition, being able to demonstrate their commitment to human rights can give companies greater confidence among customers and better awareness of the impacts of business on human rights and the environment. But there is a long way to go ➡️ businesses, governments, and civil society must work together towards clear implementation guidelines and appropriate accompanying measures to make smooth implementation possible. 🤝 At the FTAO, we are working to ensure that farming communities, particularly smallholder farmers, can benefit from #HREDD - they are some of the most vulnerable communities in the world, while a large part of our food supply depends on them. To address the challenges and maximise the impact of this legislation, it is essential to involve workers, farmers, cooperatives, local civil society organisations, trade unions, communities, and human rights and environmental defenders. 🔎 Read more about our recommendations for supporting the implementation of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive in global supply chains: https://lnkd.in/eTFpEPAE

Despite its flaws, the #CSDDD delivers a clear message: Europe will no longer tolerate profit-making at the expense of people and the planet. This new directive is a win for the countless workers and communities who have been fighting for corporate accountability for years. But let’s not sugarcoat this – the true test will be how well EU countries enforce these rules and close as many loopholes as possible. Here a short video on the CSDDD's potential: https://lnkd.in/dXcXKSdj

The impact of the EU’s regulation on deforestation is already evident, and this is just one example of such legislation. It’s difficult to imagine the enourmous costs that SMEs would have to bear if many other regulations of this nature are imposed by different countries. While the justification for such laws in general is not hard to argue with, it’s also prudent to consider harmonization of standards and requirements going forward, as well as embedding coping mechanisms like capacity building in implementation, in the short run, to ensure SMEs in developing countries stay in the game!

Well as expected, we have a clear Labour Government after 14 years out of power. Here are some very early reflections on what it means for agriculture and farming: 1. A total rural Britain political shakeup. What is striking about these results is how much of rural Britain is now covered in red, yellow or even green, whereas for the past 20+ years it has been a sea of blue. This matters because it means many parties will have to familiarise themselves with constituencies they have not represented before. That there will be many Labour MPs representing rural and agricultural areas is notable in itself, however these MPs will also be answerable to a Labour Government. They will therefore have to balance the needs of their agricultural constituent businesses whilst supporting Labour policy, whatever that may be, further down the line. In 1997 you saw far more of a rural/urban divide and it arguably then gave Labour far more licence to introduce sweeping reforms to food, farming and environment. That will not be the case now. 2. Money. The budget for Defra will need to be decided by the new Chancellor. This new 'pot' matters for new farming schemes, productivity and climate mitigation. 3. Existing workload. It cannot be overlooked that the previous Government left a large number of policy or legislative issues unfinished. A new Government will have to make decisions on these, one way or the other. Many are very well advanced and to scrap them would require further decisions to be made. The 'in tray' includes gene editing, methane inhibitors, SFI/ELM policy, deforestation (due diligence), border operations, trade policies (tariff suspensions, trade deals), National Action Plan on pesticides, CBAM, EU-UK relations - the list goes on. It will be some time before there is the time for new, aspirational policy to be pursued. 4. EU Exit (yes, really). The legacy of EU Exit still remains strong. Defra has by far the biggest number of retained EU laws to work through, and decisions need to be made on them. Since we left the EU, regulatory bodies remain overwhelmed by the workload to undertake basic functions, notably approving products in seed, animal feed and crop protection sectors. AIC member businesses still struggle to work through regulatory divergence across both the big and small issues. 5. Land Use. The biggest question for Labour is: what do you want? For too long we have been accustomed to series of Governments failing to recognise the inevitability of trade offs on land, when it is a finite and sought after commodity to deliver a variety of outcomes. We need the new Government to help facilitate a grown up conversation on where we produce our food (assuming this is believed to be a priority), where we live, where our energy is supplied and where our nature and biodiversity assets are based. Companies and CSO's urge the European Commission and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen to not postpone the #EUDR. The #EUDR is one of Europe's most ambitious pieces of legislation concerning imported deforestation. It is a chance for Europe to take its responsibilities and show the world how we can do better. In 2020, almost 1.2 million people across Europe said that they don't want #deforestation ending up in their plates! It was a very clear message. The Commission promised in July that there wouldn't be any rollback of the #EuropeanGreenDeal. We urge the Commission to uphold and strengthen the EU's ambitions in supporting responsible businesses and achieving our collective environmental and social targets!
Companies and CSOs oppose any calls to reopen the EUDR
