Miscommunication when dealing with China... I was helping an old Australian client of mine source whisky bottles from China. I sent him the catalogue pictured below. They came back with the following... "Partner did mention the lead content of glass being an issue with whiskies and leeching of lead into the product. Catalogue does say Lead Glass." Obviously lead leaching into the whisky would be a big no-no. What the supplier meant by "lead" was "leading". They were trying to say they're one of the leading and most professionals bottle makers in China. I quickly managed to clear up the confusion with the client. By providing a FAD test showing there was actually no lead in the suppliers bottles. They meant "leading supplier". The client was relived and now looking at the catalogue for the ideal bottle. The bottle supplier when I explained the confusion was a embarrassed by the whole mix-up and is now planning to edit and republish the catalogue. I've offered to help with their slogan. So, there's no confusion with the next addition of their brochure 😅 When dealing with China misunderstanding like this can happen. English has a large vocabulary and the same word can have several meanings. It always worth checking if there has been a misunderstanding and I've learnt over the years to be very literal when I'm working with Chinese suppliers. On every projects I've worked on I've always had to explain the meaning of something to the client which the supplier has communicated at some point. Often it's the directness of Chinese suppliers makes clients think they've annoyed or angered them. I just explain this is the way they communicate...Chinese can be a literal language at times and when translated into English it can seem harsh. It's just one of the fun challenges helping people source equipment from China 😄. #Brewing #CraftBrewing #Beer #CraftBeer #PeopleInBrewing #PeopleInBeer #BrewingConsultant #Alcohol #Drinks #DrinksIndustry #Equipment #BrewingEquipment #Bottles #Procurement #China #MadeinChina

It's Monday morning again. Before heading out for work, you brace yourself for the hours long meetings lined up today, which really can be done via email, by taking part in your sacred daily ritual. ☕ You enjoy a cup of black coffee. If you are relatively boujee, you might even prefer the taste of robusta beans. Heck I am not refined enough to bother tasting the difference between arabica and robusta. Anyways, which country do you think grows the most coffee in the world? 🧐 Take a guess . . . Turns out, neighbouring Vietnam 🇻🇳 leads the world now in robusta production. Well there is now ongoing concern that there will soon be a coffee shortage due to very hot weather experienced in the region. When supply drops what happens? Yes, price increases. 😱 Since the time when I was born, prices of robusta have never been this high. No prizes for guessing my age. Coffee companies are building stockpiles (not just for price concerns but also because a certain maritime strait is still not safe to sail) and hedge funds are making mint by pouring money into coffee futures. What does this mean for us commoners? 🔶 You may experience sustained shock when you patron your local atas cafe over the next couple of months "Eh, why my flat white so expensive recently sia?!" "Is this once every 2 days MYR 17 / SGD 8 macchiato in this decent cafe really worth it?" 🔶 Your source of morning joy may take a back seat. You find joy elsewhere. Your cat, your walk to the MRT station, your children. 🔶 Or, you can just be like me and stay at home and drink coffee from my home state of Johor. It's cheap, it does the job and the ingredients label at the back doesn't even identify arabica or robusta. So you are spared from this agony. Freaking brilliant. All comments welcome. If Kluang Coffee wishes to sponsor me, that is welcomed too. Sources: Comment section. Picture credit: Mine #coffeeprices #commodities #coffee #cocoa #futurescontracts

Inspired by the Wong Family's Success: Ways to Become a Seafood Vendor in Malaysia The story of Datuk Wong Keong Fook and Datin Kok Yoke Sim offers valuable insights for aspiring seafood vendors in Malaysia. Here are some ideas to consider, leveraging their family's journey and incorporating modern trends: 1. Family Business Model: Learn from experience: Partner with family members who have knowledge of the seafood industry. Leverage their expertise in sourcing, handling, and selling seafood. Shared responsibilities: Distribute tasks based on strengths. Similar to Alex (operations) and Abby (sales & marketing), delegate tasks to ensure smooth business operations and effective customer outreach. 2. Freshness and Variety: Live tanks: Implement live tanks to showcase a variety of fresh seafood, allowing customers to choose their desired catch, similar to Unique Seafood's innovation. Reduce wastage: Focus on daily sales to minimize waste. Consider offering pre-orders or subscription boxes for a more predictable demand. 3. Adapting to Modern Trends: Online presence: Establish an online store or social media platform to reach a wider audience. Utilize these platforms for marketing and showcasing your products. Delivery options: Partner with delivery services to cater to customers who prefer to have their seafood delivered fresh to their doorstep. 4. Building a Brand: Unique selling proposition (USP): Identify what sets you apart from other vendors. Do you specialize in a specific type of seafood? Do you offer unique value-added services like cleaning and filleting? Community focus: Support local fishermen and promote sustainable fishing practices. This can resonate with environmentally conscious customers. #Remember: Perseverance and hard work are key to success. Network with other vendors, learn from their experiences, and adapt your strategies as needed. *Read all of this in the May 27 issue of The Edge Malaysia weekly.
