The final project for University of Michigan students in my EDUC 212: The History of College Athletics course is a 30 for 30-style documentary. The project consists of a series of milestones, they are asked to demonstrate original research, tie in course lessons, and do their best to include input from an "expert" on their topic. As a kid, I grew up watching the ESPN 30 for 30 collection which reinforced my love for sports. Some of my favorites included Pony Express, The U, and The Fab Five. In Greg Dooley‘s History of College Athletics class I had the opportunity to make one of my own focused on the University of Michigan Cheerleading team. It starts from the birth of the sport in 1892 and showcases how the program evolved overtime going from an all male team to coed after Title IX passed in 1972. It later highlights each of the 10 national titles the program has won up through 2022. The project consisted of months of research at the Bentley Historical Library as well as interviews with individuals who have been involved with the program.
