As more folks become familiar with and begin to use community-based participatory research, it’s important to center equitable compensation. And as I’m sure many of my academic colleagues know, our institutions can make it very difficult to equitably compensate community partners and participants. This webinar, although targeted towards health departments, can be a starting point to learn some shared language and strategies to challenge outdated and inequitable infrastructure and processes in academia.

This is a topic I and many other public health leaders have been discussing for a while. Looking forward to attending this roundtable and learning from others' experiences. We talk a lot about "lived experience" and "community engagement," but that conversation also needs to include: - How are we compensating community members for their time and work? - Why specifically are we inviting them to the table? E.g. to set priorities and develop strategy? To get feedback on an initiative? To share info with trusted messengers? - How do we ensure that, whether they attend 1 event or are long-term committee members, the community is a partner in our work? Are we preparing them for discussions ahead of time (do they know the answer to #2?)? Are we providing direct follow-up to questions asked or tasks promised? Are they part of the evaluation process?

What does it look like to fund, design and implement cross-sector, community-driven and anti-racist approaches that address the social determinants of health? When we think of public health, there’s value in thinking of it as an ecosystem that involves multiple sectors, each with different roles and different strengths. This new primer from Public Health Institute's Build Healthy Places Network and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD)(NACDD), with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, takes exactly that approach.   It lays out a roadmap for how public health and community development sectors can work together—and alongside communities—to achieve their common goals to advance health and racial equity, with recommendations, strategies and lessons-learned from national, state and local leaders. On the third day of community awareness, the focus shifted towards action and collaboration. The discussions centered around practical steps and initiatives that can be implemented to address the issues identified in the previous sessions. Key stakeholders, including local leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, and community members, came together to brainstorm solutions and develop a roadmap for the future. Workshops and interactive sessions were conducted to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for their rights and access available resources. Special emphasis was placed on creating awareness about government schemes and programs designed to support education and health for marginalized communities. The day concluded with a commitment from all parties to work together towards creating a more equitable and supportive environment. The conversation "How do I quickly gain traction with my new testing program?" that I have with pharmacists is a frequent and understandable one. A very valuable resource is networks (CPESN comes to mind) and other colleagues that have experience pursuing GRANTS. The state you live in, right now, has money set aside to give to citizens, who can fulfill some much needed public health goal. That could be you, or your tech or your community health worker credentialed staff person. These frequently take the form of data collection, public outreach, and education. Reflections from the Care Showcase at Brighton Racecourse 🌟 Yesterday, Spark Care had the privilege of exhibiting at the Care Showcase at Brighton Racecourse, an event that brought together visionaries and practitioners in the field of adult social care. One of the highlights for me was listening to Kevin Humphrys, CEO at Oakland Care Group, whose insights into the future of adult social care were not only enlightening but also deeply inspiring. Kevin began his talk with a quote that resonated with everyone in the room: "Adult social care is both an art and a science, bound by the complexity of human emotions." This perfectly encapsulates the dual challenges we face in this field—balancing the emotional and practical needs of those we care for. 🎭🔬 Kevin emphasised the urgent need for fair funding reform in adult social care. It’s clear that without adequate resources, the quality of care and the well-being of both carers and those they care for will significantly suffer. He also highlighted the importance of cultural shifts within our organisations. As we evolve, embracing changes in our approach can lead to meaningful progress and enhance the care we provide. 💡🔄 Moreover, Kevin discussed how crucial the widespread adoption of technology is in transforming adult social care.
