We are delighted to announce the acquisition of award-winning author Michael Pembroke's new book, 'Silk Silver Opium: The Trade with China that Changed History'. Michael’s latest book tells the dramatic story of trade between Imperial China and the West; how it began in awe and wonder when silk first went to Rome two thousand years ago and ended in war and the collapse of the last dynasty at the beginning of the twentieth century. A good book & a must read ..
Just finished reading this amazing book, 'The Story of China: A Portrait of a Civilisation and Its People' by Michael Wood, and I was thoroughly captivated. This book is a comprehensive journey through the vast history of one of the world's oldest civilizations. Wood masterfully weaves together China's ancient traditions, monumental achievements, and the resilience of its people. Each chapter is rich with insightful narratives and vivid descriptions that bring to life the dynasties, cultural revolutions, and modern transformations that have shaped China. What I found most compelling was how Wood contextualizes historical events within the broader tapestry of global history, making the book not just a story of China but a story of humanity. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about the world's most populous nation, this book is a treasure trove of knowledge and perspectives. Highly recommend this to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of China’s legacy and its profound impact on the world. 🇨🇳 #TheStoryOfChina #MichaelWood #BookRecommendation #History #Culture #Learning #China

Book Review: “The Story of China” by Michael Wood (2020) As I prepare for my return to China this November, I decided to delve deeper into Chinese history, and Wood’s epic nonfiction work did the trick. Spanning from 2000 BC to modern times, Wood masterfully blends a sweeping overview of China’s dynastic evolution with intimate portrayals of the real people who shaped its story. He weaves together the grand narratives of emperors, scholars, and revolutionaries with the lived experiences of ordinary citizens, giving readers a nuanced understanding of how the "Mandate of Heaven" passed from one dynasty to the next. I found his approach both deeply informative and remarkably engaging. Reading this book reminded me once again of the limitations in my own education, which heavily emphasized European and American history to the detriment of a broader global perspective. As China continues its rise as a global superpower, understanding its long and intricate history becomes essential to comprehending its future—and so the future of the world. Wood’s exploration highlights that China is far from a monolithic entity. The nation has always struggled to maintain unity, which has led to periods of remarkable achievement when united and devastating turmoil when fractured. For those with an advanced knowledge of Chinese history, this book might seem sophomoric, but for me, it filled critical gaps in my understanding in a way that was both accessible and captivating. Wood’s vivid storytelling brings China's history to life. Books like “The Story of China” remind us of the importance of stepping away from the shallow tripe we are constantly fed on social media. Instead, they encourage us to immerse ourselves in full-length nonfiction that offers depth, context, and a richer understanding of the world.
