𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐆’𝐬 𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐅 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐱 The current debate on student caps undermines certainty in funding. This challenge needs a solution. Universities face a major perennial financial challenge: the majority of their annual budgets are pre-committed to ongoing operations well before the academic year starts. This underscores the need for reliable funding in higher education. For decades, university management has sought ways to generate certainty in funding with a measure of funding that is discretionary and available for strategic use. Strengthening productivity 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 resources and can be entirely within the control of university management. The latest productivity analysis by the Higher Education and Research Group (HERG) highlights that some universities are excelling in improving cost efficiency while delivering high-quality research and education. 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 The University of Sydney has emerged as one standout performer in recent analyses, earning well-deserved recognition. Importantly, other universities are also showing leading performances. Flinders University, soon to face strong competition from the forthcoming merger to form Adelaide University, has shown impressive productivity improvement. Edith Cowan University in Western Australia has achieved the highest productivity among education-focused universities for the first time. The University of Western Australia is, once again, another leading performer. What strategies achieve these successes? 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐧𝐞-𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬? The key question is whether these productivity gains are one-off successes or part of a well-planned trajectory. Will Sydney, Flinders, and ECU be at the leading edge in a year from now? If these achievements are ongoing and form part of an evidence-based plan, they can significantly strengthen and stabilize university funding, paving the way for future successes. 𝐒𝐲𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 University productivity is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end. It provides a level of control for management. Strengthened productivity unlocks funds and resources that can be redirected strategically. Australian public universities are facing possible changes in funding from international student tuition fees. The role of newly unlocked funds from productivity gains becomes increasingly crucial. Improving productivity means universities can achieve the same outcomes in research, and teaching using fewer resources than previously. However, there is a catch: the decisions needed must be evidence-based, and that evidence base is commonly not available. There are a range of reasons for this discussed in HERG’s Explainer documents (see https://lnkd.in/gxaEz3gs) More troubling is that some decisions taken without objective evidence can result in reduced productivity. One example is the poor calibration of workload models. Some universities have significantly strengthened their productivity, unlocking funds for redirection. But are these successes simply ‘one-off’, or are they part of an evidence-based program to strategically manage future university funding? The University of Sydney‘s outcome for the most recent year is a case in point. Will this success continue? If it does, then multiple opportunities can be seized for the benefit of many, including both students and staff. These can build the university’s esteem and international standing. In the coming months, the answer to this question – will Sydney’s trajectory continue - will be revealed. Read the full article at HERG’s website https://lnkd.in/g6P_7Thy for more details.

Not sure that universities are ready to be relegated to dinosaurs status YET! But worth a read for anyone working in #highereducation. Mark Farrell, asks, are universities heading towards extinction? “The notion of students as consumers, demanding value for their investment, is gaining traction. This shift in perspective forces universities to reconsider their value propositions. If a student can acquire the necessary #skills & #credentials online at a fraction of the cost, the justification for expensive, on-#campus #education diminishes. Universities must adapt by enhancing the #studentexperience, offering personalised & flexible learning options, & ensuring their credentials remain valuable in the #job market. Another significant barrier to change is financial. Traditional universities rely heavily on #tuition fees & government funding, both of which are under threat. As alternative #tertiaryeducation models become more popular, traditional universities may find their financial models unsustainable. Moreover, many institutions have invested heavily in physical infrastructure, which becomes a financial burden if student preferences shift towards #onlinelearning. #Universities are notoriously slow to change. Bureaucratic inertia makes many institutions cling to outdated models & resist #innovation. This resistance is about preserving the status quo & reflects a deep-seated institutional culture. Professors & administrators often see themselves as the gatekeepers of knowledge & resist any model that undermines their authority or reduces the need for their expertise. The #future of #highered is not a question of if it will change but how & when. Universities must ask themselves some hard questions: • Will they prioritise student needs? • Are they willing #innovate? • Can they adapt quickly enough? The path forward is fraught with challenges but also opportunities. Universities can survive & thrive in this new landscape by embracing #technological advancements, fostering a culture of innovation, & rethinking their business models. However, those who cling to tradition & resist change may find themselves relegated to history, much like the industries before them that failed to adapt.” Asia Careers Group SDN BHD - Investing in International Futures AUIDF British Council BUILA Education New Zealand | Manapou ki te Ao International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) Innovative Research Universities (IRU) University Innovation Alliance (UIA) University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN) Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (NAGCAS) Regional Universities Network The Group of Eight UCAS UKCISA Universities Australia Universities Canada Universities UK Universities UK International

What You Need to Know When Choosing a University I have studied in Universities from those at the top of the league tables (Cambridge) to those at the other end (West London), as well as having taught, studied and worked with colleagues at a number of others in between. When selecting a university, The Times Higher or Guardian and QS league tables are invaluable. https://lnkd.in/epHd27Eg https://lnkd.in/efFyYDKR https://lnkd.in/eGUFAsaM Basically, go for a university that is as high up the league tables as you can get (will accept you). My advice is - if you cannot get into one in the top third then think seriously about reapplying or an alternative career. Unless it is for a professional qualification and/or there are other factors to consider. It is not a question or prejudice; it is a question of professionalism. It is a truism that people who are good at what they do, do not need to put others down. AS A RULE, the higher up the league tables you go the more professional (better) the attitude of the people you will meet there. A university education used to be about teaching people to think critically so that they could go on to solve society’s problems. (Develop new medicines, grow crops better, predict economic behaviour, etc.) You are more likely to get this kind of education in those institutions in the top third of the league tables. Those occupying the 33%-50% bracket are still likely to be ‘old’ universities with this ethos but they will be the weaker of the bunch. The lower half of the league tables tend to be occupied by former polytechnics (‘new universities’) who tend to emphasis the importance of teaching over research, principally because they cannot compete with the old universities on research publications. This is a bit of a red herring – as mentioned, a degree is intended to be more than just ‘A’- levels on steroids; it is intended to teach you how to think critically about problems. In my experience, the staff in the universities occupying the bottom half of the league tables are more likely to be the kind of people who think that putting others down is synonymous with intelligence. It is a way of keeping down the competition (others who might make them look as 'average' as they really are) and it goes without saying that this attitude is not conducive to the objectives for which universities were founded. Similarly, the students in such institutions tend to be those who take the attitude that others are to blame for their failings. Since they are good enough to be accepted there (and by implication, good enough to get a degree) any failings must, therefore, be down to the teaching, rather than their lack of ability or willingness to persevere. It is horses for courses - well students for courses, but you get what I mean.
